Upcoming fundraiser to benefit student from Tioga Central

On Sunday, March 24, a fundraiser for Dakota Forsyth, a sophomore at Tioga Central and daughter of Jenn Apgar, will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. at the VFW in Owego. Funds raised will enable Forsyth to travel to a 3-day event in Boston in June, thanks to an academic nomination.

Sixteen-year-old Dakota was nominated by her teachers, and based on her grades, to attend an event at Harvard in Boston, Mass. for the national academy of sciences and the future physicians and medical sciences. During the event, Forsyth will be able to witness surgical procedures and ask questions of the surgeons, real-time.

At the end if the event, Harvard will issue a letter of recommendation for Dakota to any college she applies to when it’s time. Currently, Forsyth plans on studying bio-mechanic engineering.

When she finishes high school in two years, Forsyth will graduate high school with an associate’s degree. This is an opportunity to represent not only her school, but the upstate New York region as well.

The cost to attend the June event is $985, in addition to the cost of the hotel and travel. The family is hoping to raise $3,000 to pay for the expenses of the trip. There is also a GoFundMe Page at https://www.gofundme.com/16-yr-old-to-represent-her-school?fbclid=IwAR2vKg95LbbegSZj03RPtubx_F9gUZPiou6rlVQMaFGqX0Iv3736MgKA4ZI where people can donate to assist her in these efforts.

The fundraiser on March 24 is a spaghetti dinner, and non-alcoholic drinks are included. Admission to the VFW event is a $7 donation. There will also be gift baskets available for raffle.
