Troopers Issue Nearly 7,900 Tickets Statewide During Annual Super Bowl DWI Crackdown

Governor Andrew Cuomo announced on Friday that the State Police issued 7,891 tickets and arrested 139 people for impaired driving during the Super Bowl weekend impaired driving crackdown. The STOP-DWI initiative started on Saturday, Feb. 2, and continued through 4 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 4, 2019. During the special enforcement period, which was funded by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, the New York State Police increased patrols and conducted sobriety checkpoints to deter, identify and arrest impaired drivers.

“Super Bowl weekend is one of the most popular events of the year but we want New Yorkers to enjoy it responsibly and we have zero tolerance for reckless or impaired driving,” Governor Cuomo said, adding, “These numbers show our efforts to aggressively enforce the law to keep our roads safe are working, and I commend the State Police for their dedication to protecting the lives of New Yorkers during this campaign and throughout the rest of the year.”

State Troopers arrested 139 people for DWI and investigated 456 crashes, including 67 crashes that resulted in injuries, and one fatality.

As part of the enforcement, Troopers also targeted speeding, aggressive and distracted drivers across the State. Below is a sampling of the total tickets that were issued:

  • Speeding – 2,492
  • Distracted Driving – 215
  • Seatbelt violations – 230
  • Move Over Law – 127

Troopers used both marked State Police vehicles and Concealed Identity Traffic Enforcement (CITE) vehicles as part of this crackdown in order to more easily identify motorists who are violating the law. CITE vehicles blend in with everyday traffic but are unmistakable as emergency vehicles once the emergency lighting is activated, allowing Troopers to better observe driving violations.

Troop C, which covers the Southern Tier Region, made five DWI arrests, issued 231 speeding tickets and seven distracted driving tickets, eight child restraint and seat belt tickets, and 14 move over violations. The total tickets issued by Troop C over the Super Bowl enforcement period, including other violations, totaled 677.

The number of DWI arrests in the Southern Tier was the second lowest, with the number of DWIs in the New York City area being the lowest at zero. In Lower Hudson Valley there were 30 DWI arrests, and 35 in Upper Hudson Valley.

During the 2018 Super Bowl campaign, Troopers issued 7,733 total tickets and arrested 120 motorists for impaired driving.
