Tioga United Way recently issued a “Call for Entries” for its fourth annual adult spelling bee, planned for March 30, at 7 p.m. at the Owego Elks Lodge, located at 223 Front St. in Owego, N.Y.
The event, sponsored by Lockheed Martin, is a fundraiser that helps to raise money for the 34 agencies that depend, in part, on the Tioga United Way to fund their programs and activities. The Bee also helps bring attention to one of the issues that Tioga United Way supports – Literacy.
“The Adult Spelling Bee is a lot of fun and it draws attention to the wonderful work of our agencies, including Literacy Volunteers and Family Reading Partnership,” said Carolyn Palladino, executive director of the Tioga United Way.
Groups of two to six individuals will comprise each team. Anyone wishing to enter or sponsor a team can do so at tiogaunitedway.com or by calling (607) 687-4028. The cost to enter a team is $100 and teams are encouraged to dress in costume. Once given the word, each team writes the word down on a piece of paper and it is then submitted to a panel of judges. Anyone wishing to register a team must do so by March 8.
Tioga United Way’s mission is to provide hope and opportunity for our community. If you would like to join the 2018-19 campaign or make a contribution, visit tiogaunitedway.com or call the office at (607) 687-4028.
