The Owego Apalachin (OA) Music Department presents Titanic: The Musical on Feb. 8 and 9 at 7:30 p.m., and on Feb. 10 at 2:30 p.m. under the direction of Megan Burrell, OFA choral director, and choreographed by Katherine Gould, OAMS choral director.

You don’t want to miss this dramatic historic recounting of the tragic sinking of the Titanic on April 15, 1912, which remains the quintessential disaster of the 20th century. Opening on Broadway in 1997, with music and lyrics by Maury Yeston and book by Peter Stone, Titanic won five Tony Awards and stretched the bounds of expression in musical theater.

A cast of 65 OA students plays real 1st, 2nd, and 3rd class passengers and crew in the musical story, which honors the tragedy of the sinking of such a massive ship. This story shows humankind’s desire to achieve great technological works and the dreams of the passengers on board. This disaster questioned whether bigger and faster is in fact better.

Stone writes, “This is a factual story of that ship – of her officers, crew, and passengers. The central character of our Titanic is Titanic herself.”

You simply will not believe your eyes when the curtains open after the stunning opening of Titanic music played by the pit orchestra of professional musicians and seven OA talented musicians under the baton of Lindsey Williams, OFA band director.

The massive Titanic spans the entire length and width of the OA theater stage and has been built by parents and community volunteers led by Nate Brown, OAMS technology teacher. Christine Crossgrove designed the awe-inspiring scenery, and Colleen Dewey-Wright designed the stunning costumes.
