Family Resource Centers of Tioga County announces program changes in 2019

Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) of Tioga County announces new directions for the Family Resource Center program in 2019.  Beginning Feb. 1, both sites will be moving out of their current locations in an effort to reduce operational costs.

Programming for families will continue with a shift in emphasis to include more structured activities. The program will be working with host sites throughout the county to maximize reach to families who may not have been able to access the current physical locations in the villages of Owego and Waverly, N.Y.

The Waverly Free Library has agreed to serve as the FRC “hub” location for the Waverly area with regular program hours on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The Tioga County Legislature unanimously voted to allow for use of space at the Ronald E. Dougherty County Office Building for the Owego FRC hub location. Programming will extend into the greater community throughout the program year.

The Family Resource Centers have served Tioga County families for 20 years. CCE Parenting Educators partner with parents, community members, and organizations to provide parent-child activities, parenting education, resource referral, community building and parent leadership opportunities with an emphasis on engaging families with children age birth to five years. This community based child abuse prevention project is primarily funded by the NYS Children and Families Trust Fund. The current grant cycle will end on July 31, 2019.

CCE Tioga is awaiting the release of the next NYS Children and Families Trust Fund RFP to pursue continuation of state level support for this project. Local funding sources for this project include Tioga County Department of Social Services, Waverly Community Chest, Historic Owego Marketplace, and the Community Foundation of the Twin Tiers.
