Readers’ Column for the week of January 13

I’m sure many people in northern Tioga County may not realize it, but we do not have ambulance service here. Before Christmas there were two people who had problems in Newark Valley and it took over 20 minutes for the Maine ambulance service to come. I know people will quickly say they need volunteers. Well since volunteers aren’t happening, we are a very rural community; people do not work in the community. Something has to be done. Maybe the Tioga Legislature will look into it or maybe they would like to wait 20 minutes for an ambulance to come in case they have a heart attack.

No contract, no votes for the capital project.

There has been much in the news about the Catholic Church sexual abuse clergy scandal. Sexual abuse has not only occurred in the Catholic Church but it has also occurred in the Protestant and the Angelical churches. Perhaps the victims of sexual abuse in the Protestant and Angelical churches will speak up.

Someone was looking for someone who could convert 35mm slides to digital. The only thing that I have that may help them, and they’d have to call him, is Huckabone Media Media Services. It’s on Walker Road in Endicott, 757-0702. He does videotapes to DVD’s; but he could possibly help.

~

I wonder if anyone has heard of a Dollar General on 434 in Apalachin around 15 years ago? Someone told me today that it existed and did not do well and ended up closing. If anyone has ever heard of that please respond to this column.

~

I think I’ve heard enough about Mr. Corey Green. I think if these people who are talking about his reputation in the paper really want to come out and come forth with real facts, not hearsay, then they should do so and quit doing it in this column. I really can’t believe someone could write and met someone from Sidney who said. Who is they and what is their background? It’s smearing someone’s reputation without having a chance to respond to it. It just doesn’t seem right to me.

~

I would also like to know why fuel oil for heating is so damn high. You have to refine oil for gasoline; I don’t believe you have to for fuel oil. So what in the hell is going on other than greed? Do you have to have every penny we have?

~

I was wondering when Owego or Tioga County is going to get smart on Route 96. Here it is Monday again, another fatal accident going on. The way the people travel on that route is very surprising. They go at least 70 to 80 mph. Why are the sheriffs not out there? There are plenty of areas to park to catch these people especially when they are driving home from work. Everybody is in such a hurry to get home; they are flying through there. It’s a wonder there hasn’t been more accidents. I’m just curious, since the state has to get a quota, why don’t they come on Route 96 and start getting their quotas a lot sooner. I’m very disappointed in them. That’s all I’ve go to say.

~

Even so come, Lord Jesus.

Regarding the Owego Apalachin School District Capital Project Vote: The information mailer sent out on the project didn’t itemize how much money was being spent on each project. Why not let the taxpayers know? No doubt we need to keep our facilities up to snuff, and our district has done an excellent job in that regard. However, upstate New York is in decline, losing population, a trend that looks to continue. Is there really justification for spending millions of dollars on an old Apalachin Elementary School in the face of declining enrollment projections? The flyer says, No Tax Impact, but why not consolidate Apalachin Elementary into Owego and shut down Apalachin? The expense of music, art, phys-ed and possible other instruction, support staff, maintenance, insurance, heating, and electricity would be reduced through consolidation, and that would result in significant tax savings to all the district taxpayers, without affecting the quality of education. We have a great state of the art school campus in Owego. Let’s allow the kids in Apalachin to benefit from it as well as the Owego kids and save money at the same time. The Owego Apalachn School District isn’t in business to employ people. It should be educating our children in the most efficient means possible. We need our taxes to go down not just stay the same.

~

I live in Nichols and I was wondering if someone could explain to me why the Nichols Fire Department taxes have gone up 57 percent. We were to understand with the casino our taxes would be going down. They are not; they are going up! If someone could explain this in the Pennysaver that would be great.

~

Yes, naïve and dumb. That’s how the Owego village residents need to keep portraying themselves to the Owego Village Board so the five geniuses can sit around the table and decide how they’re going to throw our money away.

~

It’s 4:40 this morning, Thursday morning, and no I’m not doing drugs, I’m drinking a cup of tea and there was a big flash of lightening. Can you imagine snow and lightening! What a picture that would be and it was. Come on, don’t be sympathetic and don’t run me down, I just can’t believe it myself. What a wonderful day we are going to have!

~

You voted on the football field when you voted to accept FEMA and state funds to repair flood damage. And that’s how it happened.

~

Yes, the Superintendent is responsible for recommending the school budget. BUT, Corey Green was not the superintendent in Sidney. BTW, the person there that was still is.

~

I think that the Governor of New York should have to win the majority of all the counties in order to be elected. Our election laws should be changed so that every county’s vote is important, not just a few. I feel that our current Governor is much more concerned in helping people in the New York City area and not very concerned in Upstate New York and the needs of the people here. Also, pardoning convicted felons and letting them out so they can harm innocent people again is not being very helpful. He should be held responsible for any crimes that might result from this, and he should be prosecuted as an accessory to any harm that happens to innocent victims because of his actions.

The Salvation Army would like to thank Maryanne Settle for scheduling the bell ringers, Marcia Kiechle for taking care of the kettle by taking it to the counters, Mary Walters, and Nellie Snapp. A special thank you to the bell ringers and a big thanks to Hollenbeck’s ShurFine for letting us ring our bell in their store. Thank you to the many people that put money in our kettle. It will help the people in Northern Tioga County.

To keep our uniqueness as ‘small town” U.S.A., we need an Old Time Soda Fountain and Ice Cream Shoppe!

A few weeks ago there was an article regarding the museum in Sayre. Thank you so much for printing that! I confess I had no idea the vast extent of interesting events and displays offered! How thoughtful to have the entire year laid out so one can plan visits; it is additionally wonderful to be able to look forward to events held outdoors during our brief time of nice weather in the area. And to think this ambitious variety is planned solely by dedicated volunteers! They are all to be congratulated for their hard work; special kudos to whomever coordinates and oversees all this effort! Brilliant! Sayre is fortunate to have this addition to the quality of life in their community, and I look forward to attending many of this year’s events and displays!

Candor residents – there is a book, “Goodbye Sarajane: A Foster Child’s Letters To Her Mother” by Sequoya Griffin. The girl and her siblings were adopted by a family in Candor. The second half details the child’s experiences here and those of her siblings. If only we had known how bad it was and intervened sooner!

This is in response to the person who asked if an audiologist or hearing specialist could damage your ears. The answer is YES. I went to a hearing specialist in Vestal to get hearing aides. After having my hearing tested, he ordered the hearing aides. The ear buds irritated my ears and made them extremely sore. After trying several different ear buds he decided to make molds of my ear canals for custom buds. He had trouble getting the right one out but it did come out. He had real trouble getting the left mold out and after several minutes of twisting and pulling it came out. I heard a loud pop in the ear when he removed it and he was looking at me with a funny look on his face. He held a tissue up to my ear and pulled it away and it was covered in blood. I had to leave there and drive to a walk in clinic to get the bleeding to stop. He had torn my ear canal removing the mold. I had to return to clinic the following night for more treatment. I then had to schedule an appointment with my primary care, which gave me a referral to an ENT. I’ve been to the ENT four times so far and have another appointment this month. This has been going on since the first of August 2018 and I can’t wear the hearing aides he sold me. My hearing is a lot worse than before I went to the “specialist” and the tinnitus is unbelievable. To this date my ears are in constant pain. I don’t believe the hearing test can damage your ears, but follow up adjustments and treatments can. Be careful whom you choose! I recommend a licensed audiologist.

~

I read in this column some time ago that the Waterman Center had signed a gas lease? Now I see them logging perfectly healthy trees at brick pond. Looks like another institution has given into the dollar signs. Conservation? Baloney.

~

Does anyone know if you can FOIL iPad conversations and Email threads? I would like to know more about the Town government in Spencer. I was told that the public meetings were already settled in private meetings held on iPads and Laptops. I know the Board used to meet at a restaurant and discuss business. Is this legal? There is terrible local news coverage and there are a lot of problems that you never hear about.

~

As per the OACSD Capital Presentation of Jan. 8, the expenditures appear within the bounds of reason; however it was a bit of a sales pitch by the probable prime contractor Highland Assoc. Nothing popped out so ludicrous as the 2013 funding of $12,000,000 for the Owego Elementary School geothermal heating system. Some of the funding is for STEM or STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Agricultural, and Math) in the case of OACSD. Whether STEM or STEAM this sounds an awful lot like Wood Shop, Metal Shop, Technical Drawing, and Home Eco of 50 years ago, updated for changes in technology.

I can scan the 35 mm slides to digital. I can also scan disc negatives and convert VHS home video to digital. If interested, please email grizzly@twcny.rr.com.

National Political Viewpoints

More polarization and vitriol occurred because of the radical Marxist Democrat takeover of the House of Representatives. As Nancy Pelosi’s daughter said, “she could cut off your head before you even know you are bleeding.” Despicable Democrats hate President Trump more than they like the U.S.A. Republicans need to grow a bigger set and learn how to fight harder and control their own party just like the vicious Democrats do. Go Trump!

~

I just don’t understand people who are supporting the man in the White House. He wants to become a dictator. Is that what everybody in this country wants? I, myself, do not want to pay for a wall. He wants a wall; so let him pay for it. Putting a wall up down there and he wants to put one up in Canada, we’re going to be a dictatorship here.

~

The Communist News Network spent serious commentary on Nancy Pelosi and her superpowers derived from real chocolate and ice cream. Apparently Democrats consider this serious journalism. Thank goodness for Fox News.

~

Follow the news. Trump cares a lot. He’s making sure his cabinet officials are getting their $10,000 a year pay raises while we are in the 15th day of the shutdown, some government workers are going into bankruptcy. Almost a million government workers are on the hook now. Trump is really taking care of the little guy; I don’t think so!

~

I believe the reason all the Democrats want the immigrants to come in is because once they’re in here they’ll get lots of money, they’ll get voting rights, educational rights and everything and when the next election comes up they will vote Democratic. The last elections the Democrats barely got in but now with another 2 million democratic votes they’re almost for sure to have both houses and the presidency. That will be a bad time.

~

President Trump stayed in Washington over the holidays. Chuckie Schumer went on vacation and guess what, Nancy Pelosi was staying at a $10,000 a night villa in Hawaii! So much for work ethics.

~

Just for the record, Jerusalem has a wall around it, the Vatican has a wall around it, Buckingham Palace has a wall around it, heaven has a wall around it, Revelation 21:12. Mr. Trump has his ducks in a row. We need a wall!

~

This is to the Republican fool who continues to say President Obama gave Iran $145,000 billion in the middle of the night. It was Iran’s money! Look it up, if you can read that is.

~

I must say I have never used the “F” word or heard it in my home growing up. It’s a putrid word but when I heard the newly elected Congresswoman, a Democrat from Michigan use it for Trump I was ecstatic. Go girl, get ’em! Finally, Trump is going to get back what he deserves. Thank you God!

~

Poor Donald Putin. Maybe he should have another private meeting with Vladimir Trump.

~

I am praying that Biden decides to run for president because you know what, he’s got the best of the best, the smartest of the smartest standing behind him. That’s the Obama cabinet and that’s what we need. We need people with experience and with the smarts to run this government.

~

I believe that the person that said Obama gave Iran $145 billion doesn’t know what he is talking about. It was Iran’s money; we never gave them a penny. I think you better get your facts straight and also apologize to President Obama for calling him a traitor.

~

Is everybody as sick of this lying president as I am? Everybody around him just sits there and lies, lies, lies. What has this country become? Get him out, impeach him and just move on and get somebody decent in there. I don’t care who it is but get him out of there!

~

So tonight will be Tuesday night and we will here Trumpster’s big story for Trumpster. Now stop and think about. It says we the people for the people. Trump says for Trump American, for Trump the army, for Trump the wall. Will you please do something about this jackass that is ruining our country! It will never be me again, it will be Trump for Trump, get it? It’s not I, it’s we, it’s not me, and it’s ours! Come on, get with the language, get rid of the jerk, pull the string, do something intelligent. You’re strong enough; do it!

~

If ever there was a reason to get rid of the Electoral College, look at that fool in the White House. Must I say anymore? Change the damn laws where our vote counts. Every vote counts my butt.

~

I’d like to comment about Donald Trump’s insistence on building a wall between Mexico. His claim is one of the reason he was elected because one of his campaign platforms was to build a wall between Mexico. But what he neglected to say now is he also said Mexico was going to pay for the wall. Well, turns out they’re not going to pay for it and the taxpayers are going to have to pay for it. Typical of Trump, he’s backing off on his promises and changing the rules in the middle of the game. It’s almost like saying you elect me, I’m going to give you a new car when I’m elected. So when he’s elected he’s going to say here’s your new car, you’re going to have to pay for it. It’s not quite the same. Again, typical Donald Trump.

~

Hey Trump, where are the pesos? Remember Mexico was going to pay for the wall. What a liar; it is such a joke.

~

Have you seen the new sign hanging in the window outside President Trump’s office? It says, I hereby promise and swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Ha, ha, ha.

~

A national emergency? The last time a bogus national emergency was called it was by Adolf Hitler and the start of fascism that accounted for the death of millions and millions of people. We have white nationalists here in the United States who would love to see a national emergency and arise of fascism.

~

$16.4 billion, with a “b”, is spent yearly on illegal immigration. Now I’m not a mathematician, or a so-called smart Democrat, but I do realize that the amount is far less than what President Trump has requested for the wall. There’s your money to build it. It’s very clear the Democrats are not in congress for the American people. The Democrats are there for themselves and to obstruct and I believe no congress member should be paid until that wall is built and the government is up and running.

~

Do all you Trumpsters realize and understand that our first line of defense against terrorists and homeland security are the people who are not getting paid? What kind of stress do people who live paycheck to paycheck need at this terrible time? You want to be in their place? Can you go without a paycheck?

~

The money “given” to Iran was their money being returned. It had been frozen in bank accounts belonging to them. Or maybe you think it would be okay to just keep it – akin to stealing it. Before you dash off a response ask yourself if it would be okay for your bank to keep your money.

~

To the person who commented about the media focusing on Meliania Trump’s clothes being such a waste of time. Seems funny that you are focusing on it, there are other issues in the country.

~

I think we should build Trump’s concrete wall that he wants so bad. Let’s build it right around him, his family and all his crooked cronies. I think this is what is called a PRISION!

~

Trump supporters are you proud of his temper tantrums, pouting, lies, threats and demands? He is an embarrassment to the country and world leader around the globe are growing tired of his clown act. He campaigned for a wall that Mexico would be paid for and that isn’t going to happen, so now he is trying to force taxpayers to pay for his wall. Meanwhile Federal employees and their families are in the same situation as the people who count on the aid to feed their families, and then there is the air traffic safety issue, don’t you just love this guy.

~

What do you call a Ph.D. in Biology who can’t do math, physics, and differential equations and get a job in their field? Climate Scientist.

~

Is it effete Lib ignorance or their desire to rewrite history? Answer: Neither, it is both. Last week’s caller identifies Pres. Herbert as drunk with power and blames him for the Great Depression on account of the Smoot-Hawley tariffs. Congress initiated and passed Smoot-Hawley. Let’s be pedantic here 1) the Great Recession started Oct. 29, 1929 and 2) Smoot-Hawley was enacted into law by Congress in June 1930. Dr. Know-it-all the Great Recession was more complicated than you think and its causes were well established prior to October 1929. If our public systems are producing such blithering muttonheads perhaps it is time to tear it down and start all over from scratch. Less than 10 years earlier Dem. If you wish to speak to history 100 years ago then consider Dem. Progressive President Woodrow Wilson. Woodrow (the epitome of an Eastern effete intellectual snob, he had been President of Princeton) was so impressed with the movie “The Birth of a Nation” that he showed it in the White House several times. Fact-check and research this. I hope this isn’t withheld for reasons of PC.

~

I have a nomination to make for an immediate entry in an adulting class. Ocasio-Hernandez! If ANYONE needed a class in being an adult, it’s surely her! Seventy percent taxation! Notice she didn’t say SHE would be the first to volunteer to pay 70 percent of HER income in taxes. Typical Liberal, it’s always someone ELSE to pay the bills!

~

I couldn’t believe my eyes, the first bill to pass thru the Senate is to protect Israel from U.S. company boycotts and increase funding for Israel so they can continue to kill innocent people just because they think that they will be killed if they don’t kill first. When are you going to do something for the citizens of the U.S., like stop Trump before he gives the country away to Israel or just starts WWIII; remember us, we pay the taxes you give away to buy loyalty. Then there is the UN representative sending threats to the member of the EU warning them not to support a resolution from Russia to prevent the INF Treaty from being abandoned; start working for the U.S. citizens and let the rest of the world take care of its self.

~

Question: When you filled up your tank last time and paid a LOT less, did you write a letter of thanks to President Trump? When you pay less in Federal taxes this year, will you write a letter of thanks to President Trump? When you FINALLY got a job, did you write a letter of thanks to President Trump? Interesting, Liberals are so busy spouting negative, they can’t be bothered giving thanks where thanks is due!

~

For sure build that wall, tall and use concrete, and place Mr. Trump inside!

~

The media won’t report it, but a bill has been introduced for an amendment to the Constitution to be submitted to the states for ratification. That bill provides for term limits on the House and Senate, basically limiting Congressional members of both the House and Senate to two terms in office. It would go a long way towards stopping the kind of gridlock Congress can’t seem to avoid on their own. Call your Congressional representative and ask them to vote in favor of this bill if you want to see progress in D.C.

~

Why have Pelosi, Schumer, and Obama changed their minds about building the wall? They did not oppose it back in 2003, 2006, and in 2013. Pelosi has a wall around her mansion and her vineyards. I guess it’s because President Trump campaigned on this and they will oppose everything he is for. I’m glad I don’t live up in New York City. They have 600,000 uninsured people, 300,000 of which are illegal immigrants. De Blasio is trying to put in place “NYC care” and hopes to have it passed by 2021. Simply all the 600,000 people will have free health insurance and he is going to redirect funds to pay for all of this, which will put a burden on the middle class. Those who can pay will be on a sliding scale and those who can’t pay will get it free. Now that the Democrats have taken over the house are we going to see something good from them? I think not. They don’t care about we the people. They are not focused on what’s good for we the people. They only care about impeaching President Trump. What about all the stuff they did with the fake Russian collusion they made up about Trump; and as it turns out it’s the collusion they did with this made up Dossier as an insurance policy to make sure Trump didn’t win – and if he did then have him impeached.

~

You can’t bring toothpaste on a plane but you can carry anything across the U.S. Border. ICE was created in the aftermath of 9/11 to prevent smuggling of nukes (50 and perhaps many more Soviet nukes remain missing) and other Weapons of Mass Destruction into the U.S. What is the Liberal Intellectual argument to put us in such peril? Please articulate.
