Free movie and Church dinner

The “Cotton Patch Gospel” movie will be shown after a church dinner planned at the First Presbyterian Union Church, located at North Avenue and Temple Streets in Owego, on Saturday, Jan. 12 starting at 5 p.m. The public is invited.

“Cotton Patch Gospel” is a musical by Tom Key and Russell Treyz with music and lyrics written by Harry Chapin. Based on the book The Cotton Patch Version of Matthew and John by Clarence Jordan, the story retells the life of Jesus as if in modern day, rural Georgia. Though the setting and the styling of the language greatly differs from the original telling of the Gospels, the plot structure and the message of the story stays true to the historical recording in The Gospel of Matthew.

Using a southern reinterpretation of the gospel story, the musical is done by storytelling and music by a group of Bluegrass musicians.

Harry Chapin was an American singer-songwriter, humanitarian, and producer best known for his folk rock and pop rock songs, who achieved worldwide success in the 1970s and became one of the most popular artists and highest paid performers. Chapin is also one of the best charting musical artists in the United States. Chapin, a Grammy Award winning artist and Grammy Hall of Fame inductee, has sold over 16 million records worldwide and has been described as one of the most beloved performers in music history.”

“Cotton Patch Gospel” was his last work before his death in a car accident.

Bruce Gillette and his wife Carolyn are Presbyterian pastors who started serving the First Presbyterian Union Church in Owego on Dec. 1, 2018.
