Two new exhibits and a season-full of events will highlight 2019 at the Sayre Historical Society.
The season will start out with the museum opening on Saturday, April 6 at 10 a.m. with a new exhibit titled “Working on the Railroad: Sayre and the Lehigh Valley Railroad” in the museum’s second floor Rotating Exhibit Room. Photographs and artifacts from the museum’s extensive collection will focus on the variety of work done at the Lehigh Valley Railroad’s Sayre Shops. Railroad history in Sayre dates back to 1867 when the Pennsylvania & New York Canal and Railroad Company laid tracks along the Susquehanna River north from Wilkes-Barre. A small repair shop referred to as the Junction Shops was established near the junction of the P & NY Railroad and the Erie Railway at Waverly. Later, a more complete and larger railroad shop complex was set up in Sayre in 1880. These are referred to as the “old shops,” in contrast to the “new shops” built in the early 1900’s, which were called “the third largest in the world” at the time.
The railroad exhibit will run until Sept. 4.
On May 18, the museum will hosts its first Antique Appraisal Day with experts offering detailed explanations of antiques and the value of various historic items.
On Saturday, June 29, the museum will continue the tradition of the popular “Caboose Day” with a new event called “Railroad Heritage Day.” The all-day event will focus on the impact of the railroad on the people and institutions of Sayre and will feature a presentation at 1 p.m. by railroad historian and author Jeremy Plant.
On July 27, the museum will offer a free genealogy program from 1 to 3 p.m. featuring a guest speaker and a variety of resources to discover family history.
History Under the Stars returns on Saturday, Aug. 24 with a nighttime program featuring live entertainment and a history presentation culminating with fireworks from nearby Riverfront Park.
On Saturday, Sept. 7, a History Fair will be held on the grounds of the museum featuring history displays, entertainment and food. The second of two new exhibits in the museum’s Rotating Exhibit Room titled “Scouting in Sayre” will also open that day. The exhibit will explore the long and interesting history of scouting for both boys and girls in the community including the dedicated leaders throughout the years as well as the fun experienced by the youth of Sayre in scouting.
On Wednesday, Oct. 9, the museum will transform the second floor of the historic train station into a Bavarian beer garden of sorts for Oktoberfest featuring local craft beers, tasty food samplings and live entertainment.
Finally, on Saturday, Nov. 30, Model Train Day will make its return visit to the Sayre museum with exhibits, displays and two operating model train layouts.

The Sayre Historical Society is a member-supported historic preservation organization staffed entirely by volunteers. The non-profit group receives funding from the Bradford County United Way and the Bradford County Tourism Promotion Agency.
