From the Mayor’s Desk

I wanted to take some time to write and update residents on what your village government is working on. The DRI project submission deadline has passed and there were over 40 projects submitted from private individuals for renovations or new development in our village. This now turns into a lot of work for the Local Planning Committee who is tasked with learning the details of each project and evaluating each one. There are also a handful of projects that the village as a whole will own on the list for consideration.

Our consolidated village office building is progressing, this is from a grant the village received from New York Rising for 3 million dollars to help move our village offices out of the flood plain. We will be building a new structure at our current DPW location at 20 Elm St. The building will be 6-feet above the current elevation and out of the flood plain and house the DPW offices and the Clerk / Treasurer and Mayors office in one location.

Our Waste Water Treatment Plant will be undergoing major changes soon as phase 2 of our plant upgrade will be starting in the spring / summer. Related to the wastewater plant, we just received a grant from New York State for 1 million dollars to help with a project that we must complete in the coming years to meet new environmental standards. This will help us be compliant without passing the cost onto our citizens. The village is committed to finding solutions such as these to keep our village fiscally responsible.

Our Fire Chief successfully applied for and was awarded a grant for $20,000 to outfit our trucks and vehicles with tablets to communicate better. With the New Year approaching us, I strongly believe 2019 will be another bright year for the Village of Owego, a place I am definitely proud to call home.

The Village board is committed to working together with all levels of government, local, county and state with one goal in mind, making our village the best it can be.
