Readers’ Column for the week of December 16

You may call the Owego Pennysaver Readers’ Column at (607) 687-2378 24-hours a day, or e-mail comments to readerscolumn@stny.rr.com. We reserve the right to revise or reject any message.

To the person who needs to have her lamp worked on, please call Kim at 687-9273 and I can help you out with that.

~

When is the Owego Apalachin school board going to wake up and see that the superintendent and the assistant superintendent are spending money like the district hit the lottery? Everybody in the community seems to know the district is out of money except for those two. We already know they couldn’t fund the football field because they ran out of money for that. Somebody needs to stand up and put an end to this and see what’s going on.

~

I need some help from your all-knowing readers. How is it the newspaper articles say that the latest Mars InSight Lander traveled 300 million miles to get there when it’s only like 35 or 36 million miles to the planet?

~

I was wondering if anybody could tell me why the village of Owego has not taken care of the parking lot on Court Street next to the clerk’s office. If they would stripe it, you might be able to get more cars in there; people are complaining there’s nowhere to park.

~

Lights on the River, what a wonderful event for everyone to attend. Plenty to see and plenty to do. Plenty of shops and sights for one and all. Plenty of places to eat. We have been doing this for five plus years. We go to enjoy the sights and the sounds in the village of Owego for this wonderful event.

~

Someone wrote in last week about getting lamps repaired. There’s a shop called the Northern Lamp Shop in Endicott. They will do all kinds of switches and so forth on lamps. I’ve used them many times.

~

I just wanted to say Owego outdid itself this weekend. Lights on the River was fantastic! The fireworks were new and exciting and the Owego home tours were wonderful! Thank you Owego for showing us your pride!

~

I was reading in another paper that hunger was real in Tioga County. I can certainly testify to that. If it hadn’t been for TCRM we would have really gone hungry! Thanks to TCRM and God bless you!

~

To the person last week asking for the best place to get a grill top for a 55-gallon drum – call or go to Weitsmans in Owego. Go to the steel shop and they will show you what kind of grates they can cut out for you.

~

Are there any Avon reps in the local area anymore? If you’re a rep, could you please leave your number in the next Pennysaver?

~

Thanks for the good memories of childhood games. While I’m not 82, I do remember those games. But we also played hopscotch, we jumped rope, we walked around on stilts, we roller-skated and we always had a good game of badminton. We also played a game called I’m thinking of, where your friend would give you clues about a person, place or thing and you would have to guess who it was, what was he thinking. Yeah, I don’t know if those days will be back. They were wonderful!

~

I would just like to inform the Candor town and village taxpayers they better keep a close eye on what the Candor fire department is doing. There is something going on there.

~

I just want to thank the Glen A Warner VFW for putting on such a great Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. All the honor guard and Jim Raftis and the people who came to speak about their relatives who have witnessed the Pearl Harbor event, I want to thank them. Also the auxiliary, who go through all the hard work to make such a great meal to offer everybody at the end. It was a moving remembrance and if you missed it you should make it next year.

~

I am looking for a pillow of the fireman’s fountain. I’ve seen one but I can’t seem to find where they sell them. Please reply to this column.

~

I’m concerned about the fire company in Candor. What kind of Fire Chief do we have? If he doesn’t get his own way he has everybody in the fire company ready to quit. What does he want, a new fire truck?

~

I’m calling to the person who needs their two lamps rewired. You can reach me at 659-7808.

~

If the person who called last week in this column about not being able to sell their house for five years and blaming it on historic preservation. There hasn’t been an historic preservation commission in effect for about three years, and if it’s been for sale for five years, the problem is the price. That’s what the problem is, the price.

~

This is for the caller that has the two lamps that need rewiring and new 3-way switches, there is a store that sells and does all this stuff on Badger Avenue in Union. I can’t remember then name, but they do a really nice job.

~

Next step for the elected members of the 235 educationally responsible individuals – How will you develop a basic knowledge for the decision making process? Take the test, opt out, or refuse to take? Explain that to your electorate. Proceed with the decision making process.

~

From the meteorological doctoral candidate: Thank you. Let’s start with definitions, weather and climate; factors temp, humidity, precipitation, etc. Source of energy, effects then in any direction – could lead to local textbook.

~

Six chickens found us around Thanksgiving. If these are your chickens or you would like six large chickens, please call 687-4362. You must catch and transport them.

~

I am confused. It was a relief that the old OHPC was disbanded in favor of a more friendly level headed common sense group, or so we were told, but I now see a new proposed group / list of rules pages long, as constricting as the last, perhaps even worse. If I read it correctly – now even out of sight from the street areas, such as roofs, air conditioners, vent pipes, yards, and even a swing set for your kids, will be out of your control and in the hands of someone else’s whim to tell you as the owner what you can or cannot do on your own property. I don’t get it. One step forward, two steps back. As much as I love historic preservation, it should be up to each property owner to do as they wish within reason as long as they are not tearing down an historic building. Sacrificing the homeowner’s freedom is not acceptable.

National Political Viewpoints

I see in the Pennysaver that someone thought that President Trump was invited to President Bush’s funeral. He was and he sat there in the front row. It was just Mrs. Bush’s funeral that Mr. Trump was not invited to.

~

The Federal Reserve, which has no oversight by anyone, has continually raised interest rates for the Trump administration while keeping rates near zero for Obama. This has adversely affected the stock market temporarily, so has the news of the Democrat control of the house starting in January. Both are bet on destroying Trump, the best president in over 100 years. Neither will tank the U.S. economy and the job market over the long run. China will soon give President Trump the best deal ever. Go Trump!

~

I’ve noticed lately that there haven’t been too many comments about how great Trump is. What seems to be the problem? He’s such a great businessman; he’s such a great president. I told you so! He’s going down and I’m giddy as hell. I love it!

~

I love reading your political column. It just makes me laugh! I read here that President Trump was not invited to Bush’s funeral. Well, I’m pretty sure I saw Trump sitting with the Obamas and the Clintons and the Carters. Whoever this guy is doesn’t even know what he is talking about. He is so uninformed he did not see the president at Bush’s funeral. You people make me laugh; you don’t have a clue!

~

Okay you guys, it’s Christmas time and things are tight. But what about the young man from Baylor College? I don’t care how high up he was on the ladder. I am so proud of that judge for giving that young man his freedom, but he will always have it on his shoulders because someone was out to see what she could get. Nineteen years old and an adult, and she knew what she was doing. Think about it. It’s a hell of a rough world out there.

~

If you’ve been watching the news whatsoever, what does it take to convince you that Donald Trump is a moron? And he is a sick, sick man. Let’s be real here.

~

I’ve just been watching Tom Reed on CNN; it’s interesting. The man is what he is. He’s a kiss up to Donald Trump and he’s a hypocrite. Of course what can you expect from a Republican.

~

Isn’t it interesting how our president has gotten all aggravated and scattering the papers all over his desk like a big ole baby. The man needs to grow up. You Republicans, you amaze me. You ought to be changing Trump’s diapers.

~

Why are the Democrats more than happy to spend millions on illegal immigrants and foolish projects but not on a southern wall to protect the American people? It’s funny though, and I don’t understand it; Obama, Clinton, Pelosi and Schumer all supported building a southern wall under the Obama administration. So what changed other than Obama and Clinton are not in the White House?

~

Great news! The unemployment rate is down 5 percent for the educated American, it’s down 4 percent for the uneducated American. It has not been that low since the year 2000. Amazing, and it’s all thanks to President Trump!

~

In January 1961 outgoing President Eisenhower made a speech in which he warned the U.S. about allowing the military to become too big and powerful, we ignored the warning. The 2020 U.S. Budget includes another spending increase for the military and Trump wants a 5 percent cut in all other departments, we know what that means. Am I the only person that wants my tax dollars spent on the U.S. and all of its social, infrastructure issues and an improvement in the education system? Trump is so good at dropping out of treaties, how about dropping NATO, closing all off shore military bases, eliminate the propaganda budget and let the world take care of its self. The current policy of domination, control, policing, threats, sanctions and demands has to end, the tax payers in this country need help. The continued provocation of Russia, China, Iran and South America must stop, someone in Washington DC must be losing sleep coming up with new excuses and allegations that can’t be proved to justify the huge military expenses. Educate our young people so they can perform the highly technical jobs that are currently given to immigrants with better educations, make college free for all public colleges and student responsible for room and board. Do something for the U.S. and forget about the rest of the world.

~

Trump was at Bush’s funeral. It was announced beforehand that he would be there.

~

No Clinton investigations? Look it up. There have been a multitude of investigations of the Clintons. Starting with Whitewater. Latest was the eighth Benghazi investigation. Only thing found was Bill lying about an encounter. Get over it.

~

According to a new study just completed by Yale and M.I.T., there are double the number of illegal aliens residing in this country, 21.1 million, not the 11 million we are told. The support of that population costs us, the taxpayers, in Federal, State and local taxes, in excess of $1.34 BILLION per year. How much more do YOU want to spend? Build that wall!

~

Gee, let me think, $135.6 billion to support the illegal aliens we currently are stuck with, which only goes up if more gain entry, or $5 billion to build a wall and stop the flood. Hard decision, isn’t it? Considering the affect on the inflow of illegal drugs to boot, sounds like a winner to me! We could stop foreign aid money from going to the likes of Honduras and Nicaragua to help pay for it.

~

If there is one thing to be said about Donald Trump, LOCK HIM UP, LOCK HIM UP, LOCK HIM UP!

~

All any resident in another country has to do is to go to the U.S. Consulate office in their country and request asylum to be considered. Then why do we have this invasion of “immigrants” at our southern border? It’s obvious it’s not about asylum; it’s about doing it illegally and causing chaos so bad dudes can enter in the crowd. Build that wall!

~

The caller(s) who keep defining conservatives as uneducated dimwitted wood monkeys are precious. Help us dimwits understand how Dems could have elected Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Further, why can’t Dems understand the difference between right and wrong? Their deficiency of ethics and morals was illustrated in spades with the Kavanaugh appointment. Wood monkeys know that only anarchy results from the absence of civility, ethics, and morals. How smart is it to abuse the use of power? Ms. OC has threatened Trump Jr. with the weaponized power of subpoena! “It isn’t so much that liberals are ignorant. It’s just that they know so many things that aren’t so.” Ronald Reagan. Following their logic, they should all move to the elegalitian society of Venezuela, no morals, no food, no ethics, no medicine, no freedom.

~

If Nancy Pelosi and Chucky Schumer are all so in favor of allowing any and all immigrants in, why don’t they take the lead and volunteer to take in at least six immigrants each to live with them in their home, for at least six months. During the six months, or until the immigrants have completed all requirements for citizenship, have a job and can support themselves, have learned our language, Schumer and Pelosi support them totally with their own funds!

~

Amazing, Mr. Trump is claiming victory about the charges found by the Southern District of New York, not Robert Mueller. Just as he claimed victory about the midterms. That man is not wired correctly obviously.
