Opinion: Can we do what is best for the country and the globe

Dear Editor,

While residents in California work on recovering from the forest fires and Florida and the Southeast work on recovering from the hurricanes, the United Nations is holding its annual meeting on Climate Change.

The two major contributors to an increase in atmospheric temperatures are carbon dioxide and methane. These two gases trap infrared rays that cause the rise in temperature.

Our oceans are becoming more acidic and it is this acid that dissolves the shells of our clams and oysters and makes it almost impossible for planktonic limy invertebrates to even form an exoskeleton.

The United States’ Climate Report strongly suggests that we, you and I, are responsible as we lead our lives in the industrial world. As we use energy (coal, oil, gas) we produce carbon dioxide and methane as by-products. As a nation we have to turn more to sustainable sources such as solar and wind. We have got to put a tax on carbon to help facilitate this transition.

The greatest global threat is a rising sea-level causing the displacement of millions and the destruction of coastal cities. Our military realizes the consequences of such a disaster. Do we have it in us to do what is best for the country and the globe?

Sincerely,

Marty Borko
