Question: Should I be concerned about my dog’s teeth?

Answer: We (hopefully) brush and floss our teeth twice a day and your pet’s teeth should get the same treatment. It’s much easier to implement these behaviors when our pups are little. I usually tell my clients to get some gauze (or other scratchy material) and wipe the surface of the teeth once a day to remove the layer of plaque that forms. Eventually it hardens into calculus, a mineralized layer that then needs to be removed via scaling and polishing at your vet. Remember, looking into your pooch’s mouth is an integral part of keeping up with their overall health.

Answer: I know cats hate water, but should I give my cat a bath once in a while anyway?

Question: Not necessarily. Cats are notorious for disliking water and getting wet! Luckily they are fastidious creatures that like to stay as clean as possible and will usually keep up with “bathing” themselves. I have bathed my five kitties only a handful of times, when they have either gotten into a substance I would not want them to lick off or unfortunately had some GI upset. Grooming is an important part of your cat’s daily routine, and they can spend over an hour a day cleaning their fur. If you notice any areas that are not getting the attention they need or some hard to reach spots (think chunkier kitties) a visit to your vet may be warranted. Unkempt coats are an early indicator that something may be wrong with your cat.
