Readers’ Column for the week of November 18

You may call the Owego Pennysaver Readers’ Column at (607) 687-2378 24-hours a day, or e-mail comments to readerscolumn@stny.rr.com. We reserve the right to revise or reject any message.

In last week’s column there was a reader that called that said Berkshire is doing a good job cleaning up the junk cars. Sunday morning I drove around Berkshire, just in town, and there were 24 vehicles without tags on them, so they’re not doing anything. This person must be blind or something.

~

I heard about the fight that happened between a couple students at OFA and they had the police come. When I went to school a thousand years ago things were different. You didn’t have the school resource officer in the school. When you had students fighting the principal would take care of it and suspended the perpetrators, and he or she would have called the parents. The parents would have most likely grounded their children. Things were a lot different when I was going to school.

~

I see where they say the Town of Berkshire has been cleaning up junk cars in the town. I can’t see where any junk cars have been disposed of. Can any Berkshire officials or the code enforcement officer tell us how many cars have been cleaned up?

~

Looks like the Town of Owego Highway got caught with their pants down again this year. I mean that’s a regular happening that they don’t get prepared for winter. The next thing is they can’t even keep equipment fueled up. Don’t blame Mr. Clark, the guy in charge of trucks and equipment is truck 3 and he doesn’t know what he’s doing.

~

I’m looking for someone who is available for weekly appointments. Please leave your name and phone number in this column, I would appreciate it.

~

Free bowling at Owego Bowl for all school age children on Black Friday, Nov. 23. There will be free bowling, free pizza and free soda. Hope to see a lot of people there!

~

On Tuesday, Nov. 13 at 8:30 a.m., after the snow, I drove off of Anderson Hill Road in Candor on a very slushy road that had been plowed and sanded. I drove onto Glenmary to an almost dry road. We both had the same amount of snow, same temperature. Why a clear road and not the terrible slushy? Coming home at 2 p.m., a pleasure, Anderson still wet and sand going all over the truck. What does the town of Tioga do different?

Me and my wife would like to thank the VFW in Owego for the inspiring and moving ceremony they put on for Veterans Day. It was just great to hear all the speakers. It was put together so well, a lot of effort. We really appreciate what you guys did and Wendy Post did a wonderful job for us Veterans. You write good articles in the Pennysaver and you were actually there in person. We appreciate you serving, too, in the Army. Thanks again for that great Veterans Day.

~

This is just a suggestion. I think if the Highway Superintendent did his job instead of pawning it off on his help they could run a lot smoother.

~

I just found out that Nichols might now be gaining and Aldi’s, and if the marijuana law is changed this coming year there will be a marijuana dispensary in Nichols. The paperwork has been sent for permits and other things that are going to be needed. Hot dog!

~

I heard something today at the post office when I was picking up my mail. Somebody walked in and said to the clerk, I’d like to pick up my father’s mail because of so and so, and they gave it to him. All I’m thinking is boy, they better not give my mail to anybody unless they know I’m dead or they have permission from myself. That is a bad, bad idea!

~

I’m calling in regards to Florence Alpert’s letter. If she’s so fond of Florida versus New York State, why doesn’t she move to Florida? Then she’d have nothing to piss and moan about.

~

I’m trying very hard to understand why New York State put in the ten or 12 crosswalks on Route 434, Route 17C, and the on and off ramps to Route 17 East and West. If there are ten people that cross these roads in a year, that would be a lot. I can see the use of safety, but I believe this is overkill. When these were put in the DOT failed to fix the many potholes that were right near where they were working. This sure seems like a lot of wasted money by the DOT.

~

Did you know there is a Free Clothing Closet at the Apalachin United Methodist Church on Pennsylvania Avenue in Apalachin? We are open Monday through Thursday, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. except for holidays. We also accept donations of good, clean clothing.

~

The Sanmina plant is not in the village. Whoever owns the property is responsible for cleanup.

~

Interesting juxtaposition this week. One person complaining that their town doesn’t have a full time code officer and a person in another village complaining that they have a full time clerk. Just can’t win.

~

Just wanted to say thank you to all the residents in Owego who donated non-perishable food for the annual Scouting for Food. The cub scouts collected about 170 pounds of food, which was donated to a local food pantry. From all of us at Owego Pack 37, thank you and Happy Holidays!

When our three kids were infants, they had pacifiers they “needed” every once in a while. Somehow, they became called “Binkies”. I’m thinking there’s a lot of similarity between those pacifiers and electronic devices for way too many people these days. Everybody now has to have the electronic Binkies.

National Political Viewpoints

Well, that clown Cuomo won again because of New York City. Is their any way we can succeed from New York City and possibly build a wall?

~

The president made 1,000 false statements for the month of October. More will come in November, as we all know, it’s the normal thing now to lie. Everyone accepts it, I don’t. Trump stated he didn’t know Matt Whitaker who wants to become Attorney General, but spent time with Whitaker many times in September. Really! God help us all and this country.

~

Last week a caller asked if us voters were happy with electing Tom Reed back. Yes we are. Tom Reed was the best candidate and yes we would even vote for him again. So the answer to your question is yes, we are happy with Tom Reed.

~

So Cuomo comes through again. Another massive tax break to get Amazon warehouse here. He needs to call it what it really is, and that’s corporate welfare. It’s so sad and upsetting that he just does not get it and Amazon may not be the company it is today, and then what? It’s on the backs of New York taxpayers to come to the rescue. Cuomo will be long gone. I hope he didn’t strain himself too much in making that decision. The Democrats all saying he worked so hard to get Amazon to come here. I hope he didn’t strain himself, I hope he didn’t tire himself out as he needs to do more with tax breaks if that’s what he is going to do. What about the tax breaks for the middle class? He doesn’t ever think about those people.

~

The disrespect Trump has shown to Veterans, especially this past week, is unforgivable. I can only hope you Trump supporters, and the VFW and American Legion are all paying attention.

~

When it got closer to the midterms the democrats started talking about immigration, tax reform, etc. Now that they took over the house, to quote them, they are launching a “subpoena cannon” on everything Trump. They are going to do every investigation they can dream up total of 100 investigations. They don’t care about the country except to turn it into a socialist country. As far as the elections, makes you wonder what is happening down in Florida; could other votes have been rigged in order for the Democrats to take over the house? In Arizona, Sally was ahead and declared the winner but all of a sudden overnight thousands of votes showed up and put the democrats ahead. I feel sorry for Republican Sally who has now conceded the race, which I’m sure, was rigged. Where have all these extra votes come from? I can’t believe how corrupt they are. Once Hillary lost the race they started the Russia probe, which turns out there is nothing involving the Trump campaign. It all is pointing to the Hillary camp. Isn’t it funny since they couldn’t find anything with Russia they moved on to the porn star and then the Ford fake hearing against Cavanaugh? When that didn’t work they started the talk about the blue wave. Could it be they rigged the election? You don’t even hear the democrats talking about what they are going to do for “We The People” – the ones that count. How sad, I didn’t want to believe how ruthless they could be.

~

I am getting sick and tired of reading comments about liberals bringing in immigrants to get their votes. Only citizens can vote. Green card holders can’t vote. People on a refugee status can’t vote. DACA kids can’t vote. Anyone who tells you otherwise is a liar. It’s that simple. They’re lying. And by the way, unless you are a Native American, aka Indian, you are an immigrant or descended from one.

~

Mr. Trump has had a bad week. Just wait until the house starts holding him accountable. That will drive him crazy. Now that’s he’s messed up this country, he’s off to France to make their lives miserable. I think President Macron will put Mr. Trump in his place and be able to defend their country.

~

How shameful and disrespectful Mr. Trump was last week in France. Why didn’t he just stay home? Not only are Americans disgusted with him, the rest of the world is seeing his true colors too. Unable to attend the 100-year-old world ceremonies because of the rain – might get his hair wet. Give me a break. Stay in Florida and play golf, impress your millionaire friends.

~

In response to last week’s comment about the rudeness being used in the President’s news conference, I agree. The president should be answering questions and not blasting reporters; it’s his job to report to the country what’s going on in the world. It comes under the category of too damn bad if he doesn’t like the question. RESIGN!

~

This whole immigration / wall debate is going to look stupid in about 25 years. Demographics show that, at that time, our increased life expectancy combined with our low birth rate will mean that we will have to beg or perhaps even pay immigrants to come here. Even today we admit nearly one million every year to maintain our labor force. Ideally we need about four workers to support every retired person. Most other Western countries are already feeling the pinch. It’s going to be a whole different world.

~

Donald Trump’s record of disrespecting our Service men and women: Mocked a war hero – John McCain; dodged the draft five times; has done nothing to help our 39,471 homeless Vetsl hasn’t visited our troops in a war zone once since taking office; skipped out on visiting a WWI cemetery to honor our fallen soldiers because of a little rain; was late to a ceremony in Paris so he missed walking other World leaders who walked shoulder to shoulder to honor fallen service men and women on the 100th anniversary of the end of WWI; didn’t bother to go to Arlington National Cemetery to Honor our fallen from all war s- instead he stayed in the White House to sulk and send out nasty tweets; expressed outrage that absentee ballots were going to be counted in this election – the majority of which come from service personnel serving overseas; and sends troops to the boarder to protect us from a non-existent invasion so they will not be home for Thanksgiving. This is a man who says if someone kneels in silent protest they are disrespecting our troops. Really?

~

What part of stupid don’t the Democrats understand? The PEOPLE are happy with President Trump and what he’s accomplished. The Democrats are unhappy because their swamp is being drained, so hey want to stop him. Gee, I wonder why this creates conflict? And the media is right in there, tossing bricks whenever they can.

~

You gotta love it! The Liberal Democrats make a fuss about the Republicans fudging elections, etc., but who almost always gets caught having actually engaged in election shenanigans? Just look at Florida. You think votes aren’t being generated as we speak in order to make those elections come out the way they want them to? Hah! And it’s not Republicans doing it!

~

Poor Mr. Trump has had a bad week; first the democrats beating him disgracefully, then the Stormy Daniels hush money incident, being caught in huge lies about whether or not he knew the newly appointed Matt Whitaker, and finally the worst – his hair getting wet while in France.

~

Be still my heart. Is it possible, with Jeff Sessions out of the way, that Hillary gets fitted for the orange jumpsuit she so richly deserves?
