Veterans Day to honor all who served

Veterans Day to honor all who servedOne hundred years ago, August through November of 1918, many from Owego and Tioga County dedicated themselves to service during World War One. Many locals served in uniform during the Great War. Twenty-five made the ultimate sacrifice, laying down their lives for the freedom we enjoy today.

Veterans Day 2018 at VFW

Owego and Tioga County will commemorate those who made the ultimate sacrifice in WWI. The recognition event will be held on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. in Warner Hall of the Glenn A. Warner Post 1371, Veterans of Foreign Wars. A red poppy will honor each Fallen WWI Hero.

Public Invited

The public is encouraged to join veterans for the inside VFW service. For those unable to attend because of understandable church commitments, ask your pastor or rector to say a prayer for veterans. You may join the program in progress.

Find WWI Memorabilia

Bring your WWI memorabilia to Warner Hall. Document the stories of service and family ties. Document our Doughboys, and find the men and women in your family who served in WWI.

Searching for WWI information are Tioga County Historian Emma Sedore, the Tioga County Historical Society, and the Tioga County Veterans Service Agency. More are most welcome to search.

Share WWI Centennial With Students

Educators in the public school systems are encouraged to organize Veterans Day events with World War I programming for their schools and youth groups to help students understand and appreciate this important part of our history during the first two weeks of November.

Ring the Bells of Peace

Local churches have been asked by the Tioga County Veterans Service Agency to toll their bells or chimes at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. These Bells of Peace mark the 100th anniversary of the great armistice that silenced the guns of World War One and recognizes those lost during the war.

Veterans Day Honors All Who Served

Posting of the Colors, the National Anthem sung by Andea McBride, an Invocation by Sister Mary, director of Tioga County Rural Ministry, a Roll of Honor for veterans who died since Memorial Day, and remembrances on 10th Anniversary of Route 38 – Vietnam Veterans Memorial Highway of Valor and the 32nd anniversary of the Tioga County Veterans Memorial are included in the Veterans Day Honors All Who Served program.

Special recognition will be accorded to Korean War Veteran and 86-year-old Gerald Keene of Waverly. He’s the longest living American Legion Commander in New York State and past Owego VFW Post 1371 Commander (1985-1986) and a member of the Honor Guard.

Not forgotten are the POW/MIA, especially the four from Tioga County that are still in Korea.

Eagle Scout Fallen Hero Project

Whenever it is necessary to especially honor the gravesite of a Fallen Hero in Tioga County – like Wreaths Across America at Christmas time – the exact location of the burial site is now known and documented.

Troop 60 Eagle Scout Ryan Trenchard visited all cemeteries in Tioga County to record by GPS the final resting place of those that served. There’s more to show at his first presentation to veterans in Warner Hall.

Route 38 – 10th Anniversary

Ten years ago, State Route 38 from Owego to Sterling – an almost 100 mile stretch – was dedicated as the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Highway of Valor.

Hear from the veterans who worked extremely hard to make this significant tribute possible as part of Veterans Day 2018.

Nursing Home Veterans Remembered

The VFW Post 1371 Auxiliary and Veterans of Modern Warfare will visit veterans at Riverview Manor in Owego.

Newark Valley Honors Veterans

Route 38 goes through Newark Valley, Berkshire and Richford. A Vietnam Highway sign marks the intersection of Route 38 and 38B by Visions and Goodrich Auction.

The Newark Valley Historical Society invites all veterans in the three Northern Tioga County communities to a free dinner at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, in the Newark Valley Fire Department.

Waverly Honors Veterans

Waverly will post 115 Hometown Hero banners before Veterans Day.

On Monday, Nov. 12 at 2:30 p.m., Elderwood in Waverly will honor resident veterans. Mayors of the three Valley communities will join the Sayre Elks in presenting the program. Each veteran will be introduced and hear a personal story about their service. The Valley Honor Guard will be present.
