Arrow Making Workshop at the Bement-Billings FarmsteadParticipants at the Oct. 27 workshop at Bement-Billings Farmstead will have an opportunity to make their own arrow. Provided photo.

The Newark Valley Historical Society will host an Arrow Making Workshop on Oct. 27, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Join Flintknapper Michael McGrath as he walks you through making your own replica arrow.

This workshop will interest re-enactors, flintknappers, hobbyists and those seeking a unique décor item, suitable for display only. Guests will have the opportunity to make their own primitive arrow in the old Native American way using wood shaft, real turkey feathers, hide glue, pine pitch glue and real sinew.

Learn how the Indians procured, prepared and used these materials, and the importance of the arrow shaft to primitive survival. Participants will choose between using a flint point or a metal trade point to tip their arrows, and between making either a plains style or eastern style arrow.

The fee for the workshop is $21 for Newark Valley Historical Society members, and $26 for non-members. All materials for making the arrow are provided.

To register, call Leslie by Oct. 19 at (607) 642-5412. Scholarships are available. The Bement-Billings Farmstead Museum is located on Route 38 in Newark Valley. Visit www.nvhistory.org to learn more.
