On Monday, members of the VFW 1371 furthered their mission within the community by presenting Sister Mary O’Brien, from Tioga County Rural Ministry, with a check for $3,475. The money, according to VFW member Alycia Haus, was raised during their annual golf tournament, held this year on Sept. 8 at Pheasant Hill Golf Club in Owego.

VFW members presented noted that the funds raised will further their mission to reach out and help other’s in the community. According to VFW member David Bensley, the tournament had 16 teams this year.

Haus and Bensley remind the community of some upcoming activities planned to include the Friday night dinners, held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the VFW, and the Tuesday night Wings and Things, also held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the VFW.

This year’s Monte Carlo event will take place on Nov. 3, from 7 to 11 p.m. at the VFW in Owego. Proceeds will be split between the VFW and its auxiliary, and Owego Hose Team, Inc.

Twice a month, Haus noted, the VFW hosts karaoke. You can call the VFW at 687-1371 to find out when they will be hosting their next Friday evening karaoke event.

Bensley reminds the community of the free bowling event coming up on Nov. 23, Black Friday. According to Bensley, last year’s event was a success, with 130 children participating for a total of 220 games.

The event is free for school age children, and is sponsored by the VFW, Owego Bowl, and the Owego Free Academy Class of 1967.
