Top-notch entertainment, classic cars and more at Woof Stock  Jeff Howell’s newest project, Boogie Du jour, will headline the Sept. 22 Woof Stock event to benefit the Broome County Humane Society. Promotional photo provided by Jeff Howell.

On Saturday, Sept. 22, the Broome County Humane Society (BCHS) presents “Woof Stock” and the first annual “Cruise-In 4 Paws Car Show” from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Pines Pavilion Event Center, located at 1660 Union Center Highway in Maine, just north of Endicott, N.Y. A family oriented event, all proceeds will benefit the BCHS.

Woof Stock tickets can be purchased for $10 in advance or at the door the day of the event. Children ages 12 and under are free.

New for 2018 is a car show which will feature a large collection of classic and modern vehicles. Car show registration is $10; with 25 top car trophies to be announced at 2:15 p.m. Admission for the public is $2 and comes with an entry for a $500 door prize.

Kim Broderick, co-organizer of Woof Stock, explained that a motorcycle ride was unable to run this year due to riders having another engagement on the same day.

Instead, Broderick said, “We decided to change it up and add the car show.”

Another new addition for this year is vendors. With no cost to set-up, vendors can utilize a 12’ by 12’ booth space to present their crafts, food, retail or animal-related items. Vendors are required to provide their own tent, table and chairs.

Woof Stock will also feature basket raffles, 50/50’s, face painting, food and drink for purchase, as well as adoptable animals.

Broderick explained that the BCHS houses upwards of 250 animals at one time. The BCHS receives no government assistance, so fundraisers such as Woof Stock are one way they seek needed funds to give basic care to animals. The organization spays and neuters as many as 150 animals each month.

Live music entertainment begins at noon. Taking the Woof Stock stage from noon to 1 p.m. will be Owego’s self-described groovy and spacey rock group, The Spelunkers, who will be followed by the Binghamton-based band, Project Z. The Z band shared that classic rock from the 1960’s through today is on their set list from 1:15 to 2:15 p.m.

Popular regional artist, Tim Ruffo, of the Tim Ruffo Band and also known as TRB, will perform with band member, Anthony Hopkins. The duo is slated to perform from 2:45 to 3:45 p.m.

Ruffo commented that performing as a duo is something he typically doesn’t get the chance to do very often, and said, “I’m looking forward to playing and it’s for a great cause,” and chuckled as he added, “At Woof Stock, I guess we’ll be TR2.”

Ruffo said the one hour set will feature rock and roll along with his signature outlaw country style, with tunes from TRB’s first and last record, and, he remarked, “A couple of surprises.”

Headlining the Woof Stock stage will be Ithaca-based artist Jeff Howell, along with one of his newest projects, Boogie Du Jour.

Boogie Du Jour, described as “heavy rockin’ boogie blues” features energetic music from Howell’s polished and longstanding professional career, and where he pays homage to three national acts he played with for over 35 years.

From Foghat, the Outlaws and Savoy Brown, Howell’s savvy bass playing took him to venues all over the world, and he now shares that memorable music with the southern tier. Along with playing well-known classics, the band will also perform new material. Fans will remember that the group played at the most recent Owego Strawberry Festival.

Boogie Du Jour includes vocalist and slide and electric guitarist Greg “Mize” Meisner, as well as lead guitar and vocalist Richie Roccisano and drummer Jeff Rembecki.

Howell said, “I look forward to playing,” and added that merchandise and CD’s will be available for sale.

Broderick commented that the BCHS is always in need of volunteers, such as to help with daily dog walks or to assist at clinics, among other tasks. In addition, the BCHS looks for donations of pet food such as Purina cat or kitten chow, Pedigree adult dog and puppy food along with wet dog food. Everyday items such as paper towels, spray bottles and brooms are needed as well.
