Remembering Carrie Crowningshield

The first annual ‘Carrie-On’ Breast Cancer benefit Poker Run, in memory of Carrie Crowningshield (Scharfenstien) will take place on Sept. 15. The Poker Run begins at 9 a.m. at Tioga Downs Casnio Resort and ends at 210 Ketchumville Rd. in Newark Valley.

All money raised will be donated to Triple Negative Breast Cancer Patients in the Southern Tier, and for a Nursing Scholarship for an Owego Free Academy senior in Carrie’s name.

Carrie was born Dec. 23, 1976, and graduated high school from Owego Free Academy. After graduation she went to college for Nursing.

She worked at UHS Wilson Hospital as the Operating Room nurse. It didn’t take her long to become the Nurse Manager of the OR.

Carrie then moved to Hudson, Fla., where she worked at the Medical Center of Trinity Florida Operating Room.

Carrie loved being a Nurse, and loved Barrel racing with her beloved horse Lizard.

On Nov. 8, 2016, Carrie was diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer in her right breast. Carrie started chemo right away. She received adriamycin and cytoxan every other week for four cycles.

An MRI was completed to check size of tumor, and the tumor actually grew.

On Jan. 31, 2017 she underwent a bilateral mastectomies and axillary the dissection due to disease progression.

At exactly four weeks post procedure she started chemo, receiving weekly taxol and carboplatin every third, 4 taxol and 2 carbo.

The Cancer continued to progress. Her oncologist said he has never seen a patient that has not responded to 4 chemo agents.

On April 6, 2017 Carrie traveled to MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston Texas to see a triple negative cancer specialist. Once again she started chemo, the cancer continued to progress.

On Sept. 23, 2017, Carrie’s body gave into the cancer.

According to her family, she never gave up.

The family stated, in an email, “Carrie was an amazing person who left a positive memory with everyone she met. She was a strong, courageous and beautiful person who touched so many lives. Carrie was taken too soon and I keep telling myself that God must have a reason.”

By holding this annual Carrie-On Breast Cancer Fundraiser Benefit, the familiy hopes that Carrie’s tradition of touching lives will carry on.

For those attending, there will be a corn hole tournament at noon, a Poker Run (cars or motorcycles) starting at 10 a.m., silent auctions starting at noon, raffle tickets, 50/50 raffles, and live music from 4 to 7 p.m. with refreshments available.
