From the Mayor’s Desk

A lot has been going on in the last month. Your village board is working hard to make the village a great place to live, raise a family and run a business.

A lot of talk has been going on about the recent Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) award of $10 million.

A few points to clear up are how the process works.

There will be a team setup called the Local Planning Committee (LPC), this team is made up of village and county officials, members of Team Tioga (Economic Development and Planning) and a team assigned to us from New York State.

We will start meeting to come up with possible project ideas, eventually there will be open public meetings for ideas. (Stay tuned for a listing of dates.)

The planning process will take about a year before exactly what projects get funding is decided.

The money has to be spent in the pre-defined area that was laid out in the application.

Our Police department has a new Chief, Joe Kennedy. He has helped us replace a car that was totaled in an accident with the money received from the insurance company. He has also worked with the Owego Apalachin School district to place a School Resource Officer in the school. This officer is employed by the Village of Owego but contracted (paid for) by the school district. This is a big step forward in protecting the most valuable assets in our lives, our children and grandchildren. From idea to reality this happened very quickly, so I would like to thank Chief Kennedy for his hard work on this.

New LED Street lights are going in around the village, these are brighter, cost a significant amount less to operate and will cost less to maintain.

Union agreements have been reached with both the CESA and PBA, which were both overdue by over a year. I would like to thank the village board for their hard work to bring these negotiations to a closure.

We had a successful summer season at Marvin Park, there were many smiling kids using the pool. As fall approaches remember your leaves do not have to be bagged, just raked to the curb, watch for more information and a schedule on leaf pickup.
