One of the hottest days of the year on Monday, Labor Day, and Jim Raftis, Sr., a regular contributor to The Owego Pennysaver, waits for the Nichols Old Home Day parade to begin, and at his favorite spot on the corner of Main Street and River Road. He told us he’s attended for decades; and that across the way he broadcast the parade live on the radio, and behind him, often dropped in for an old-fashioned soda at a favorite stop, the Nichols Hotel. On Monday, Sept. 3, the 107th annual Nichols Old Home Day, sponsored by the Roki Community Club, brought the community together for a parade and activities at Kirby Park in Nichols, N.Y.

Following the parade, a flag raising ceremony took place at the park. Although evidence of the recent flooding could still be seen in some areas of the park, it was masked by bright sunshine and summerlike temperatures.

Music, face painting, a bounce house and slide, and games, pony rides, various vendors, concessions and a chicken barbeque highlighted the day.

Here are a few photos from today’s event. You will be able to view more photos in the next print edition of The Owego Pennysaver Press.
