Readers’ Column for the week of Sept. 2, 2018

You may call the Owego Pennysaver Readers’ Column at (607) 687-2378 24-hours a day, or e-mail comments to readerscolumn@stny.rr.com. We reserve the right to revise or reject any message.

This message is to the Town of Owego Highway Department. In case you forgot where we are located on Stevens Road in Apalachin, we’re east of Toby Road just west of the Tioga County line. Somehow you have forgotten the road and the mess it has been in. You did drop some blacktop in there in the winter. The road is all holes; you’ve forgotten we’re all taxpayers up here. There is also going to be an upcoming election. You didn’t do a fantastic job of really widening the road. I realize it’s a county road, but that wasn’t done in the winter either when it came to plowing. We are taxpayers; I think we are going to remember this because the road has still got holes in it. You did do Toby Road, but what happened to Stevens? We are living up here and we are taxpayers!

What do you do with inconsiderate neighbors who leave their grass growing for about a month and then they get a big professional grass mower in and blow the grass into our side? Are you kidding me? I have to rake it all up! Is that right? I wish I could afford a house in the country. Definitely country people are much more considerate.

If anyone out there in the community has an electric wheelchair that they are no longer using or in need of, or knows somebody else that does? Even if it’s for a small fee, I would be interested in hearing of it. I have a disabled friend and her insurance company is going through the paces trying to work out getting her a new one and in the meantime she is stuck without being able to go anywhere. My number is 625-2195.

It would be nice to see if the lot that is between 247 and 231 Main Street could be trimmed. It’s starting to look like a field.

~

One person really can make a difference. Thank you for the beautification of Liberty Street! Meg.

~

Hey Owego village! Ten million bonus cash! I wonder if any of that will go towards revitalizing the sewage plant?

~

To the Village of Owego residents who are crying foul over their latest tax bills. There’s only one answer to what this is, communism and redistribution of wealth but stand by, the next group elected will be much worse than this one.

~

To whoever is responsible for painting a stop stripe on the road near the stop sign at the Talcott Street and Glenmary Drive intersection, please do so? So many people blow through the stop sign and block the intersection for anyone trying to turn left on Talcott Street to Glenmary.

~

I’d like to know when they renamed Erie Street to the Erie Turnpike. It’s seems all the cars going up and down there are going 50 mph and the tractor trailer traffic is unbelievable. It’s like a turnpike!

~

This is Terry Shipman Dairy, I’m calling from 1626 Ellis Creek Rd. in Waverly. I’m looking for someone to assess the damage on my cornfields up on Crandall Road due to beef erosion. My number is (607) 565-4351 and you’ll have to leave a message.

~

So let’s get this straight. Governor Cuomo just gave Owego $10 million and what does Marty Sauerbrey and her posse want to do with it? Revitalize Owego? Bring more jobs? Duh, under this current board in Owego your sewer has gone up, you have lost Sanmina, you lost the bus service which lost many jobs; so how are we going to bring jobs back? I am a young person here in Owego and see no future. My parents struggle to pay taxes and no money for transportation to get anywhere including doctor’s appointments without having to pay the high cost of a taxi. Will someone on that board please use some common sense for common folks who live here? If you want to keep young people here, do what is right for all of Owego, not just pad the pockets of a few.

~

In the Village of Owego there is a request to rezone a large chunk of property adjacent to North Avenue to industrial. I think that should be put on hold until after the $10 million grant is decided and maybe that would be part of the revitalization.

~

Candor has made a great choice in choosing their Elementary nurse. She is very caring and compassionate, and I also credit her for saving my daughter’s life. She knew what to do during a life threatening asthma attack.

~

Regarding trees that threaten power lines, there are about six “ancient” maples at the Newark Valley end of Brown Road that definitely fall into that category. If the wind is blowing I hesitate to even drive past them. I was told by a NYSEG employee that because of the risk involved cutting them down, it’s better to wait until gravity does its work. I keep hoping that three or four will come down all at once to save the line crews from coming back repeatedly. On the other hand, someone is going to get an enormous amount of firewood.

~

Soil erosion and agricultural runoff are the top sources of water pollution in the United States.

~

I am wondering what organization is going to delegate the money that Governor Cuomo donated to Owego. Seems lately the same places are getting grants and bonuses. Hopefully it will be fair.

~

At this month’s Village of Newark Valley Board meeting an individual was totally out of control. The mayor kept his cool while repeatedly requesting him to leave. I really expected the mayor to call the sheriff’s department. I have not in my entire life witnessed such juvenile behavior from an adult. I would like to go to next month’s meeting, but now am almost afraid to.

National Political Viewpoints

There’s a political ad on TV that shows a young woman who shows her father was deported and she said her father had a heart attack after he was deported. They showed a picture of Trump and blamed him for her father’s heart attack. That ad is nothing but liberal Democrat hogwash.

~

I wouldn’t read Hillary Clinton’s victory speech for a million dollars! She’s a loser who won’t admit that she lost.

~

That draft-dodging president of ours says he has a lot of respect for the military. He won’t appear at John McCain’s funeral. Go Trump, go to jail, and go to hell.

~

Remember when Senator John McCain was running for president and a lady in the audience referred to Barack Obama as an Arab? He took the microphone away from her, corrected her and said no, he was decent American loving Christian. Could you imagine Donald J. Trump ever doing that? Even Disney couldn’t imagine that!

~

So Cuomo comes to Owego to announce a $10 million grant, he’s only looking for votes, and then he talks about corruption? Wow! This from a man who is constantly surrounded by scandal and corruption.

~

I think the deal that Barack Hussein Obama made with Iran was collusion. I think that the deal Hillary Clinton made with Russia and giving 20 percent of our uranium away was collusion.

~

I can’t even look at Trump on TV anymore. He’s on TV way too much, plays way too much golf and his loose lips are sinking ships.

~

I’d like to make a statement about Donald Trump’s idiotic thinking of not lowering the flag of the White House. I am a veteran from the Viet Nam war and I think John McCain deserved that respect. A man who has not served his country and is the President of the United States has the gall to say no and then have the public tell him yes it should be lowered. I thing the president should be impeached and I think that he is an idiot. I have never called this paper; I’ve never complained about anything, but as a veteran of the United States of America, I think this country needs to show its respect for John McCain, who is an American hero.

~

The same dimwits who were asleep at Obama’s and Hillary’s feet now mouth fake news and lies beyond measure. Trump is the best president of all time. The never trumpers need a brain transplant because they look like colossal idiots and losers. We have record low unemployment, building the wall, fixing veteran medical treatment and new highs for the stock market. The never Trump morons mouth the worst invectives about Trump, but they cry like spoiled brats when all he does is fight back with a tweet. Now another gigantic triumph for Trump, NAFTA is out, a much better Mexico trade agreement is in. Canada will follow within a month or two and finally China will fall in line. Go Trump or go home!

~

I think it’s great that the Dems have a jackass for a mascot. What’s much worse is the fact that we all have a jackass for our president.

~

Mr. Trump says he can shoot a person on the street and get away with it. What does that say to Americans?

~

President Trump threatens violence if the GOP loses. Sounds like a dictator to me.

Violence? What world is he living in?

~

Now that we are filthy rich, how about getting an elevator in the Coburn Free Library. There are a lot of people that use this great building. I think it is a far greater use of the dough than fixing the river walk and several projects that need doing. The library has several drives to raise the money, so why not underwrite the balance needed?

~

Mr. Trump wanted to spend millions of dollars to honor the veterans of the country, but yet he couldn’t give Senator John McCain, a true war hero, an ounce of respect. How small can a person get? PATHECTIC!

~

As a veteran, my blood is boiling over how our petty President handled the passing of a true American Hero, John McCain. I am a Democrat and didn’t always agree with many of the positions that Senator McCain took. However, I never once lost my respect for his service to this country or ever doubted his passion to make this a better country. With his passing last week, Trump showed the world just how mean, vindictive and childish he can be. Refusing to even say one kind word about McCain while he was alive is truly indicative of a man with no heart or soul. Then, in the most disgraceful move of all, Trump had the White House flag raised to full staff before McCain was laid to rest! It was only after intense pressure from veteran groups and the media, did Trump grudgingly agree to have the flag lowered to half-staff. It then took two full days before he issued a statement honoring McCain’s service. If you watched Trump when he made that statement his body language spoke volumes. How any veteran could continue to support this man is beyond me. Trump has dishonored the office, and I for one look forward to the day when he is no longer there.

~

Date line -WASHINGTON – White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow said Tuesday that President Donald Trump is considering new regulations on Google’s search engine to address his concern that it turns up too many stories that are critical of him. If this doesn’t scare the hell out you nothing will. Trump wants to control what you read; how soon will it be when we can’t read anything?

~

Foreign governments or corporations never pay tariffs; they are paidm, in the end, by the consumer in the form of higher prices. President Trump’s proposed 25 percent levy is simply a way to add income to the federal treasury to help offset the deficit caused by the new tax law, which threatens to add one trillion dollars to the national debt this year alone. It is little wonder that these tariffs are opposed by every leading businessman in the country, businessmen who have not filed for bankruptcy six times in their careers.

~

After 18 months of corruption, greed, racism, misogyny, xenophobia, bigotry, ineptitude, betrayal, crime, treason and just plain evil, America will soon see the light at the end of the tunnel. Trump’s downfall is inevitable.

~

Can someone logically tell me why Robert Mueller continues to pursue this witch-hunt of President Trump and any Republican, while Hillary Clinton gets no heat? The Clinton Foundation is a scam and is known to be so, and Hillary is known to have violated numerous crimes, yet nothing happens with any of them? Why?

~

Puerto Rico is a commonwealth. Its citizens are U.S. citizens. There is no paperwork needed to move to the mainland, as they are already citizens.

~

And yet another comment from someone who doesn’t know the difference between democratic socialism, socialism, and communism. Toss in dictatorship and they get really confused. We really need to upgrade our school’s curriculum.

~

God Bless John McCain and his family, we will miss you. You are a true hero and earned my respect. Wow, now at least two channels will not broadcast the national anthem at the beginning of football games. How unpatriotic of them. What they should do is not put the camera on the players and put it on the flag. I look forward to the national anthem played at the beginning of each sporting event. I like whenever we are fortunate to see a Yankees game and at the 7th inning stretch they play Ethel Merman singing “GOD BLESS AMERICA”; gives me goose bumps every time and I stand and put my hand on my heart and sing along. It seems like people want to make America into a dictator country. They are taking statues down, changing names of towns that are part of history, whether good or bad.
