It takes a Village to grow a garden! Campers, staff, and volunteers from Lions Camp Badger learned the value of teamwork and cooperation last week when they planted a large vegetable and flower garden.
The camp teamed up with Tioga County’s Cooperative Extension to learn, firsthand, where their food comes from. Community Foods Systems Educator Missy Bidwell guided campers through the process of soil preparation and planting. Local volunteer Ron Crawford offered roto-tilling services.
Several international camp volunteers from the nonprofit youth exchange group AIESEC spent hours weeding and preparing the space. A generous donation of plants from Mountaintop Greenhouse provided the camp with plenty of hardy flowers and vegetable plants.
This activity provided a wonderful opportunity for campers to see where their food originates. Additionally, it offered them vocational experiences in the field of horticulture.
Campers enjoyed the planting activities and are now busy maintaining their garden to prepare for the upcoming harvest. They are looking forward to using the vegetables in their camp meals. Any vegetables that ripen after camp will be donated to the local food pantry.
