Opinion: Amish influx in Berkshire

Dear Editor,

In the June 24 column there is a very nice call expressing how the influx of Amish families will benefit the Town of Berkshire. They will improve the farmland as well as the barn buildings, and not accept any government money. They will support their own schools and send their children to them.

The call to the column also states that in addition to all of the above, they will still be subject to our school taxes and other taxes, their taxes will be increased because of improvements they make to their land and buildings. In other words they will be penalized for making the improvements, but that is one of harsh realities of our society.

I am wondering if conditions for the Amish are even harder in Pennsylvania, so much so that they, or some of them, are leaving Pennsylvania for New York.

Sincerely,

Karl Tiemann
