Corrections Officer arrested for theft

According to reports received on Wednesday, Tioga County Sheriff Investigators arrested Corrections Sergeant Jonathon Edwards, age 36 of 38 Candor Hill Rd. in Candor, N.Y., and an employee at the Tioga County Jail on Monday evening, June 18.

Edwards was taken into custody at the Tioga County Public Safety Building and was charged with the following offenses – Burglary in the 3rd Degree – a class D Felony, Petit Larceny – a class A Misdemeanor; Official Misconduct – a class A Misdemeanor; and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the 7th Degree – a class A Misdemeanor.

Edwards, who currently serves as a Corrections Sergeant at the Tioga County Jail, is accused of stealing property from the Public Safety Building located in Owego, N.Y. and possessing a controlled substance. Edwards has been relieved of his duties and placed on leave pending further Civil Service proceedings.

The report received from the Tioga County Sheriff’s Department did not disclose any further information relating to the charges.

Edwards was arraigned by Town of Nichols Justice, Michael Byers for the Town of Owego Court, and was remanded to the Tioga County Jail in lieu of $20,000 cash bail or $40,000 bond.

Edwards has been transferred to the Broome County Jail where he will remain in custody until released by the court.
