Readers’ Column for the week of June 17, 2018

You may call the Owego Pennysaver Readers’ Column at (607) 687-2378 24-hours a day, or e-mail comments to readerscolumn@stny.rr.com. We reserve the right to revise or reject any message.

Craziest idea I’ve ever heard! Governor Cuomo wants to rename the Tappan Zee Bridge! Leave well enough alone. It’s the Tappan Zee Bridge now and forever, never mind putting his dad’s name on it. His dad didn’t lift a finger.

Marshland Road got paved again this year? They forgot Marshland Road extension again for the past eight years. We’ve been having nothing but terrible potholes and big holes in front of our mailbox. When are they ever going to come down Marshland Road extension?

I want to leave a huge thank you to all of you who slowed down as well as stopped to get my coonhound, which broke through my grip to go after a young woodchuck on Saturday evening, June 9 at approximately 8 p.m. Without your kindness as well as humanity towards my beloved dog Duke, the outcome would not be as it is. Unfortunately the woodchuck was not as lucky in the grips of my dog’s teeth. I wish I could change that outcome. Again, kudos to all of you and a great big thank you.

In regards to junk in the Town of Newark Valley, I see that they have complaints about Berkshire, but the code enforcer in the Town of Newark Valley doesn’t do too well himself, even though he’s been taking classes to learn more about it. There has been a junkyard off Wilson Creek Road that has a rusted backhoe, unlicensed car, etc. The neighbors have complained for years, the junk gets bigger and bigger and nobody does a thing. I don’t know about the neighbors, but I’d like to see that cleaned up myself.

I would be interested in knowing where I can find a farmers market in Tioga County that does it on an evening during the week. If they would please leave a message in this column.

To the person who loves to pay high school taxes and is very happy with doing so, I’m glad you’re so wealthy. For the rest of us, yes, the school taxes are fixed. Do you know why? Every time it is voted down you just keep bringing back the vote until it passes; and if you notice, there are probably three times the amount of people in each school district – and if you add up all the votes that are tallied at the end, there are only that the amount of people are the amount of people that work for the school system.

On behalf of the Gibson Corners Cemetery Association, we have the highest regard for our veterans, however Mother Nature does not. None of the cemeteries visited were up to par because of the weather. If you think the cemetery was not mowed out of disrespect for our veterans, think again. We are a volunteer organization, what have you done today?

Someone called in about the Lions Club broom sale. Actually it was June 9 through 13, door to door. In the Tioga County Community Press, this month’s issue, which is available at many locations, there is an ad in it about the price of all the products or you can go to www.apalachinlions.com.

To the person who was complaining about the one house on the street and it made all the other’s look bad and assumed it was because they didn’t care about their property; maybe next time you should stop at the house and see if it’s an elderly person who needs help or she lost her husband and can no longer do it, can she afford to hire someone to do it, maybe it’s a family that lost a job and has a mower that doesn’t work. Before you pass judgment on that you should stop and see if maybe you could lend a neighborly hand or find someone to help these people out. I’m not saying there are those that don’t care, there are plenty; but you never know. Maybe that one house just needs someone to reach out to them.

~

Thank you Owego Choral Society for the performance of Sing America’s Song and for all who attended.

Here is a suggestion to the people who had someone burning stuff next door to them. What we have done is call the police, the DEA, and my insurance agent suggested we do that along with my lawyer. The reason being is that if something caught fire due to their fires, then it’s documented that they are responsible for it and they’re aware of it and the insurance may not even cover for them but your insurance will you have gone on that route to do that.

~

I have a free daybed size and single size mattress, absolutely clean, hardly used. Anyone who wants it must take it himself or herself. That’s the only drawback, absolutely free! Call (607) 598-2889.

~

I’ve been wondering if there is any reason why they will not or have not paved Stevens Road in Apalachin between the trailer parks. We do exist up here; we are on that road every day. They did attempt to fill the holes, when there was a lot water in the holes they would come by and splash in the blacktop and that was it. I was just wondering if we are on the list for a pave job. We sure would appreciate it.

~

How many people complain about others expecting to get something for nothing, then go on to want to take their salary and benefits, but don’t think they should have to pay the people that negotiated it for them? I guess they think it’s okay if they are the ones getting something for nothing?

~

I see the Newark Valley Fire station has a sign that reads, “Friends don’t let friends vote Democratic.” Is this legal? We pay taxes for our fire station.

The Village of Owego was the recipient of the title “The Coolest Small Town in America” in 2009. That was the result of a competition that included the submittal of a promotional video. I remember seeing the video at the time, but it seems to have disappeared off the Internet. Doing a Google search will show programs at the time mentioning Owego as having won, not the video itself. Does anyone know the URL link to that promotional video, or if they have a copy of it could they see that it gets uploaded to an appropriate local site? I am sure we would all like to see it again.

Looks like another Dollar Store is going up in Apalachin. Wonder if the property next to it will be a used car lot? After all, these types of businesses are what make up Tioga County! Seems if you want anything else, you need to go to Broome County to spend your money.

~

This is for the people who complain about having to pay school taxes after their children are grown and gone. Senior citizens and people with no children at all helped pay for your kids’ education, and we all continue to pay because a good school system benefits everyone! How can you be so selfish? Are you the only one who paid taxes when your children were in school? Of course not! My children are grown, and I am on a “fixed” income, a very small pension, but I gladly support public education. The idea that you should stop paying school taxes when your children graduate is completely ridiculous.

National Political Viewpoints

I hope somebody’s going to Singapore with Trump, because anybody has got to have some smarts that’s going to make a deal for us that will be any good.

~

Okay, this is the deal of the day and then I’m done. Did you ever notice the real same likeness between Trump and Roseanne? Stop and think about it now before you shock yourself. He is the biggest drama queen that has ever been in the White House and he gets away with it. Roseanne said her smart remarks being silly on TV and did not hold the title commander in chief, she was just an everyday person, but he gets away with it because he thinks, and can be, the biggest drama queen, get that – queen, that was ever in the White House. There has never been a likeness of him and he will put us straight to hell. The biggest drama queen ever put on this earth, big as in personally.

~

President Trump is doing a fantastic job! Much better than anyone thought he would do. The miserable loser Democrats are microscopic mice compared to Trump’s accomplishments. The lame stream media cheered for North Korea when Trump originally cancelled the denuclearization summit. Now they are silent when the meeting is back on. We have a real leader for once and the Democrat traitors do not like it.

~

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Donald Trump is a moron. A gullible moron, we didn’t get a thing out of his meeting with Kim Jong-un, not a thing! Just wait and see.

~

In response to last week’s caller in regards to good guys not being reported preventing shootings, there were some 77,000 incidences in a year. The reason they are not reported is because the lame stream media doesn’t report it. They don’t want to tell everybody that things have been helped and changed because of good guys with guns.

~

This is to our president moron, I bet he makes minimum wage while Trump is a multibillionaire who has real estate all over the world, has his private plane that is bigger and better than Air Force I, and has 17 professional politicians to become presidents, not to say what he is doing to make this country great again.

~

Wake up American people! Trump has alienated our allies, Canada, Mexico, Germany, France and England, just to name a few. However he’s in Putin’s pocket and playing kiss kiss with North Korea and China. Three more years of Trump and we’ll be calling each other comrade.

~

How pathetic it was to watch Trump trying to sing God Bless America. He didn’t even know the words and looked so stupid. God help us all and Trump is accusing the Eagles team that they are doing a political stunt. Well guess what, Trump is a political stunt!

~

I am so sick and tired of people bashing Donald Trump and his family, especially in this column.

~

If President Trump succeeds at the summit, the dimwit Democrats and their acolytes will credit the North Koreans, China, and even the laughable Obama. If the summit fails they will blame Trump because they hate Trump more than they love the U.S.A. America first, go Trump!

~

It’s very obvious that Mr. Trump cares very deeply about America and the American people. He is the only president who had the guts to stand up to all other world leaders, and now North Korea commits to complete denuclearization. After all the conferences and meetings America will benefit as will the world. He truly is the master of the deal. I am so glad he is in office. Go Trump, go 2020!

~

The business about Roseanne getting her show cancelled made me think of the classic sitcom of All in the Family. The things that Archie Bunker said in the show would not go today. In some ways he was more practical than his son in law, but since that time people have gotten too fussy and politically correct.

~

I’m so proud to have Donald J. Trump as our president. He is doing historical things like with Jerusalem and Israel, the deal with North Korea, the economy’s never been better, black employment is at its highest levels in years. Trump is interested in America first, not like our past President Obama, apologizing for everything about the United States. He was destroying our country. Good to have him gone.

~

The person who said the president is the highest noble office in the country is correct and should be respected. Unlike past presidents, this current president shows time and time again why he does not get that respect. He always puts down others and calls them names, not a sign of a good leader. To earn respect you have to show respect. I may not be a leader of anything but my parents taught me that at a young age.

~

Not sure of the date, but believe it was in the 80’s that the U.S. government borrowed from Social Security because it had excess in the fund; was it ever paid back? It happened, I believe, twice. Also the funds would be there if they stop giving benefits to individuals who have never paid into it.

~

Like it or not, the Constitution only restricts pardons to those being impeached. The President thus can pardon himself for any Federal crime right up until he is impeached for those crimes.

~

For the party that refuted the info that a good guy with a gun has stopped a bad guy with a gun upwards of 77,000 times on average per month in the U.S., guess you didn’t Fact Check that one. It does happen on a regular basis. How come you don’t hear about it, because it doesn’t fit the narrative the Liberal media pushes. Same reason you don’t know of the thousands of high school rallies held in support of the 2nd Amendment and the thousands of high school students who speak out in support of the 2nd Amendment, including some from Parkland High school in Florida!
