Readers’ Column for the week of June 10, 2018

You may call the Owego Pennysaver Readers’ Column at (607) 687-2378 24-hours a day, or e-mail comments to readerscolumn@stny.rr.com. We reserve the right to revise or reject any message.

Many famers in the Southern Tier have found it economically impossible to continue dairy and beef production due to low product prices and rising input costs, and the cost of doing business in New York State. This area is rich in fossil fuel reserves, but that might imperil our health, according to Albany. Fuel royalties would have helped sustain agriculture and the economy in our local communities. Many of the open meadows and pastures are best used for grass and hay, but market for hay is through a ruminant into meat or milk. Demand for these products in waning as many consumers have few resources to spend on them. It is a shame to see these properties grow up to brush and scrub trees. If the public policy gurus in Albany would consider and encourage a cellulosic biomass digester on county owned industrial sites, the farmers could provide annual and perennial cellulose fuel for processing. Many acres are not suited for corn and ethanol production, but could support biomass production and the land could be restored for human food production, should the need arise. A cellulosic biomass digester produces not only ethanol, but many other products used in green diesel, aircraft fuels, and products used in industry that now are mostly supplied by processing crude oil. The digester produces products two ways – through gasification and enzymatic hydrolysis. There are many plants in New York that are open and operational – Jamesville, as an example. Let us explore this subject.

Cash reward for information on the identity of an older, bald man that stole money from me at the Vestal Wal-Mart early Friday morning, June 1 at 1:10 a.m. After my purchase at the self checkout I did a cash back option and neglected to retrieve my money. The man behind me saw that and decided he would help himself to it. I filed a report with the Vestal police department and they looked at the tape, saw this, but his identity remains undetermined. If anyone knows of this man’s identity, please contact me at (607) 349-9074.

The reason we haven’t heard about good guys with guns preventing upwards of 77,000 incidents a year is because it isn’t true.

How are the school votes fixed? If they were they would always pass and have huge increases. Face it. People are happy with their schools and consider the cost acceptable.

~

I don’t remember seeing a congressional race on the school ballot. I must have not been looking hard enough because people are complaining about electioneering for congressional candidates at the school vote so there must have been. I’ll pay more attention next year.

An Avon vendor is needed for the Candor 4th of July carnival. Please reply to Liz at meddlerny@frontiernet.net.

~

I was just wondering if anybody could explain why Marshland Road got paved again this year. I got an idea, but I wondered if someone could explain that.

~

A big thank you to the Candor Emergency Squad and Meals on Wheels, especially Laura; for the delicious BBQ Chicken dinners on Mother’s Day at elderly housing.

~

I finally figured out what is wrong with the Town of Owego Highway, there is absolutely no management; and in eight years it hasn’t changed.

~

A special thank you to the Nichols American Legion for visiting the little Brickfield Cemetery to salute lost ones who gave their lives for our country. First time in over 40 years I have seen this happen. Thank you once again.

~

I would like to thank the Apalachin Lions for their support in my time of need. You are fine attribute to our community. God Bless.

What can be done to get the tractor-trailer traffic off of Erie Street? It’s particularly bad in the morning. The trucks come down East Main, and then down Erie, which they shouldn’t be on.

~

Are you missing a friend or family member who drives a small vehicle? How about a family pet or some livestock? Check the ponds on the bottom of Valley Road. They might be there. And be sure to check out the erosion and the mosquito habitats that have recently been created along the roadsides in that area. I’m sure the DEC would love to see the conservation friendly work that’s been done.

~

I’m calling because I’m very upset about what I just witnessed on Fifth Avenue. I was coming back and there was a beautiful turtle trying to cross the road. People were zipping by it. I pulled over and decided to try and help this turtle, and people were just going at their own pace. I’m livid. I pulled over, and a nice young man named Andy, who drives for Owego Taxi, came over to help get the turtle back out of the road and he took the turtle back to Brick Pond. She thanked him, and he said, “Yeah, I didn’t want to see this one die. There’s another one down the road that didn’t make it.” When I drove by it, the poor turtle was only 3-inches away from freedom, and someone hit it. I want to know what coward would hit a turtle that didn’t do anything wrong to him. I’m also curious as to why the “Watch for Turtles” signs are not up.

~

I am a person that lives on Norris Avenue; last year we still had a racetrack down through here. Our supervisor said they didn’t catch anyone, and the police must be blind because this is nothing but a racetrack in the morning from 6:15 to 8 a.m. I’ll record this on my recorder so they can hear it. I’d like something done about this. Maybe they will do something when someone gets killed. The speed limit is 30 MPG.

~

As I ride through town in the summer, I see on every street how there is that one house that doesn’t care about cutting their grass. There are all of those neatly kept properties, and there is that one sore thumb. Doesn’t seem considerate. A little pride in your property would probably be appreciated by your neighbors.

~

In response to last week’s caller, don’t blame gun owners and the NRA for the school shootings and people getting shot with guns; blame the parents. These parents don’t take charge of these children and they don’t teach them the right morals, or how to solve problems. They get bullied a bit, so they go get a gun and shoot people. The parents are to blame for these shootings, and you parents should get your act together; because I don’t want your kids shooting my wife and me.

I was reading this column, and I read where the Town of Berkshire isn’t doing a very good job of cleaning up abandoned junk cars. The Town of Berkshire’s code enforcement said they wouldn’t tolerate junk cars in the Town of Berkshire. Can the officials and code enforcement tell the residents how many cars they have removed this year? I have an idea; they haven’t removed any. Just giving the residents more lip service.

To get rid of moles, you can drop a few ex-lax pills down their holes, or you can put used cat litter down their holes.

~

I am looking for somebody that does embroidery on a machine. If you could call me at (607) 754-6481.

~

I would like to thank Dan Ayres and his crew that helped get the ballfields ready at Tioga this weekend for a beautiful tournament. I would also like to congratulate the Waverly Minor League Softball girls for winning with five straight games.

~

I would like to know how to get mothball smell out of clothes. Please respond in this column.

~

I have free a 7-foot green couch in good condition. Call 659-3871. It’s free and it’s in good condition.

~

I’m curious to know if the Apalachin Lions Club still sells brooms. I’m interested in a wisk broom if I could find one.

~

Whatever happened to Greg Zyla’s articles? I found them to be the best reading in The Owego Pennysaver. Please bring them back.

~

I watched a documentary on heroin. Accounts were said that people overdose 14 to 15 times. They referenced one person who was sent to 25 rehab programs and did not finish one. Now does this sound like people looking to be cured? Help is available, but most of them refuse it. They think it is easier to do the time than the rehab program, which takes a lot of work. So why do we continue to throw enormous amounts of money at this addiction. I think we should put that same money into making our schools safe. Hope this doesn’t continue, that we throw good money after bad.

~

I would like to know who has the contract for the Gibson Corner’s Cemetery. I am hoping something will be done before July 4. For those who have families that are veterans buried in that cemetery, it would have been nice to walk through a nicely mowed cemetery instead of the grass, 6-8 inches high. Please try to get it done before the Fourth of July. It really would be appreciated.

~

I was calling about the comment in which someone was wondering what to do with stuffed animals. Call 754-4105, ext. 2175, I would greatly appreciate it.

~

Didn’t the FCC a few years ago say that commercials couldn’t be 10 times louder than TV shows? That worked for a couple of years, but it seems like lately they come on so loud that you have to mute your TV. I’m wondering if they rescinded that law. Please respond to this column.

National Political Viewpoints

My friends, I have felt a need to make a clarification about a remark that was made by Nancy Pelosi in which she stated that we all have a “spark of divinity in us.” While it is true that God creates us all in His image, we are not all children of God. We can have the privilege of becoming His children when we choose to believe what He has said about His Son (John 3:16). Jesus Himself has said, “With all the earnestness I possess I tell you this – unless you are born again, you can never get into the Kingdom of God (John 3:3 TLB). He made it very clear that there is a step we each must take before we can experience the wonder and joy of becoming a child of God. The Apostle Peter tells us, “For you have a new life. It was not passed on to you from your parents, for the life they gave you will fade away. This new one will last forever, for it comes from Christ, God’s ever-living message to men” (1 Peter 1:23 TLB). When we truly believe God’s message, we are sealed by the Holy Spirit of God (born again) for all eternity as a child of the one true living God. For further study on this truth, please read John 3:1-21 and 1 John 2:27-3:21.

~

I wish that the President would quit claiming that Mexico and Canada stole American jobs because of unfair trade agreements. In truth, American companies moved production outside the United States to avoid having to pay the cost of their employees’ health insurance. We are the only country in the world that imposes that burden on the employer. If insurance companies did not own our congress perhaps we could have fair, universal health care like other civilized nations.

~

Do you believe Mr. Giuliani says Mr. Trump can probably pardon himself? Sure do

wonder what law school he went to.

~

Whoever called in last week and said the democrats lie, do you know who Donald Trump is?

~

The housing decline started in 2006 and collapsed in 2008. Cuomo and de Blasio were NOT at HUD then. It was five to seven years into the Bush administration.

~

From reading the comments in this column, it’s easy to see that there are many getting their news from the “mainstream media” and believing what they hear without doing their own research to discover the truth. Just ask yourself, is this country better off than it was under Obama? Are YOU personally better off with President Trump? Five hundred days in office with President Trump, and FEEL the difference, regardless of what the “mainstream media” would have you believe.

~

Why does Roseanne’s show get cancelled because she Tweeted remarks about Valerie Jarrett, and apologized for having done so, but Samantha Bee’s vile comments connected to Ivanka Trump, which Samantha did apologize for, get excused? Why is it that anything the Libs want to say is supposed to be okay, but not for Conservatives? I don’t get it! I thought everyone was equal under the law; guess that’s a lie! I mean, look at Hillary. Breaks many laws, yet she still walks the streets as if she weren’t a criminal!

~

President Trump and his supporters want to build a wall to “secure our borders”. Curiously they only want to secure about 2,000 miles of our border between the United States and Mexico. What about the northern border not even secured with a picket fence along most of its 3,000 miles; and how about our 25,000 plus mile coastline? Apparently bad guys don’t have boats or planes and they only come from the south.

~

There are said to be lies, and then there are damn lies. Chuck Schumer tells us stupid lies. Schumer told us the price rise of gas is the result Trump’s withdrawal from Obama’s unratified and unconstitutional treaty with Iran. This is blatantly false! This is nothing more than Schumer giving cover for Venezuela’s Maduro. Venezuela was the richest county in South America; now it is the poorest. Everyone, except the corrupt socialist / communists, is starving. Babies are dying. Social Justice Warrior Maduro caused their huge oil industry to collapse and now uses food as a weapon.  Schumer and his leftist gang will have you equal in misery and equal in slavery rather than unequal in freedom. Venezuela’s misery and the increase in the price of oil have actually begun to lower your price at the pump. One premise of the Communist Manifesto is to tell any lie, which will get you to your end.

~

Here we go again. Everything HAS to be President Trump’s fault. The NFL is a business. With this nonsense over kneeling during the National Anthem, attendance at games declined, as did “viewer numbers” of televised games. Thus, less business in terms of merchandise, food, beer, you name it. Owners wouldn’t put up with that, therefore, the owners initiated the stand during the National Anthem, nothing to do with President Trump, other than he supports it.

~

There is a landmark case now before the Supreme Court, Janus v. American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Union – the AFSCME, the nation’s largest Public Employees Union. It is expected the court will decide for Mark Janus and against the Public Employees Unions. Unions will no longer have the power to confiscate dues from public employees without consent. Mark Janus objected to confiscation of his salary because it was being used to appoint (buy) politicians who Mr. Janus, a resident of Illinois, considered evil and corrupt. However this is New York. Like Cuomo’s illegal scam to protect his wealthy (RICH PEOPLE) donors from Trump’s tax increase (SALT limitations), he and cronies have enacted laws countermanding the intent of Supreme Court’s decision before it is even rendered. This is by giving New York public employee unions’ greater powers of coercion. New York, by far, is the most heavily unionized state, has the greatest out migration, most politically corrupt, highest (2nd) income inequality, highest taxes, most laws, least free, etc. Know your place as a New York State Serf. You work for Cuomo, who works for the New York public employee unions. Of all of New York’s 62 counties, Tioga County has the greatest out migration except for one other. Our property taxes relative to the rest of New York and the Nation are the highest. Is it any surprise our children all leave the area?

~

We are citizens of a one-party (tax and spend leftist) state. And we have the most corrupt politicians; and because of this the greatest income inequality (second to California), most powerful public employee unions running the politicians, thus second highest debt (second at $300B), highest taxes, greatest number of laws regulating daily life, highest homelessness rate, highest net out migration, highest K-12 education costs, etc. and the list goes on. “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results,” quoted Albert Einstein. Of New York’s 62 counties, Tioga County is losing population faster than all others except one, yet we have the greatest oil and gas potential. Use of our resources would stop this decline. Tioga County, Pa. racks in billions of dollars. Tioga County, N.Y. received $1.2M in gambling revenue thanks to generosity of Governor Cuomo. Of New York’s 62 counties, only one is losing population at a faster rate.

~

The office of President of the U.S.A. is respected as the highest noble office in this country, perhaps in the world. Donald Trump is, providentially, our duly elected President. However, the demeaning, degrading, insulting slurs hurled against him (and his innocent family) in our beloved country, and especially in this column, are far beyond the dignity of decent, honest, normal human beings.

~

I watched the Trump rally in Nashville last night and the arena was packed. It’s very evident that the smart people love him.

~

Did you just happen to hear the piece on TV with that man Trump talking about Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi; I don’t care if they’re Democrat or Republican, but when you can stand up and call another person a loser and unfit for their jobs, and you yourself are nothing but a two-faced liar, and just smile while you lie. What the hell kind of a person is that. Wake up and get new young blood that has something between their ears besides air; and I’m talking about Trump.

~

Nancy Pelosi said North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong-un, was having a fit until Trump lowered the boom on nuclear negotiations. And the North Korean’s did a quick re-boot, now all patriots can have a giggle fit over Nancy Pelosi. Meanwhile, President Trump goes right on working hard and just passed the right to try experimental drugs bill. Go Trump!

~

Have you seen what Trump has done to spur the economy? All they have done is make the CEOs richer. Did you see how the workers at Harley Davidson in Indiana bought their stock back, the plant got its tax cut, and then they closed the plant and moved it to Asia. They laid off 80 workers. Thanks a lot Mr. Trump for what you’ve done for our Country. You’re really making America Great Again!

~

You wait and see, Trump is going to pardon Michael Cohen and the rest of them. Nothing is going to be done. He’ll get away with it. Instead of the truth will set you free, apparently Trump’s pardons will set you free. You people amaze me. Open your eyes. He’s a thug.

~

You know, I think we have something backwards. So Trump has lots and lots of money; do you think Martha Stewart, and those men, didn’t pay to get these pardons? Check it out. Somewhere down the road you will find out.

~

Well the new jobs report is out – 3.8 percent unemployment, the lowest in 18 years. Thank you Mr. Trump.

~

To all you so-called Evangelists / Christians who support Mr. Trump, I will not call him President, have you ever heard “the truth will set you free?” Or is it that Trump will set you free? It’s a no brainer.

~

I would like to thank the person in last week’s column that talked about believing a person who has lied to them over 3,000 times. I didn’t realize Hillary had lied to us that many times. Also, Obama is probably 2,900.

~

Cardinal Pell, a sexual abuse priest who also has criminal charges against him, was with the famous Scott Pruitt at an EPA event three weeks ago. Someone from the EPA tried to hide the meeting. Generals were not allowed to attend. It’s enough to make you sick. I never knew so many people were so crooked and rich. The whole Trump clan thinks they are above everyone else.

~

Weaponize the EPA? Greed? EPA regulations protect OUR air and water. What about the rest of the human race? Not Wall Street! Look at the damage that will be done to our planet when fracking goes wrong. And it’s the only planet we have. You need to turn off your TV and look at reality.

~

How does that Ivanka Trump even dare hold her happy looking child, looking so loving to him? There are so many other sad children who are being taken from their mothers. Trump’s family has no compassion for the poor or the immigrants. The Trump’s have no shame. I’m happy that Samantha Bee said what she said about Ivanka. Someone had to do it, and for sure the Republicans wouldn’t. I’m sure many mothers were also upset.

~

I don’t care if you are republican or democrat, but that moron we have in the White House is a real piece of work. If he thinks he can pardon himself, like he’s talking, I’d hate to be in his shoes.

~

Cuomo says he’s looking at getting to the bottom of the very tragic school shootings, so what’s he doing? He’s looking at more gun legislation. This man just does not get it. Last week’s caller was spot on when they said it is not until we bring religion and God back into our lives that these tragedies in the world will go away. Cuomo needs to wake up.
