Opinion: Amish ‘Horse and Buggy’ signs are needed

Dear Editor,

The following is a letter that has been sent to Tony Signorelli, Regional Traffic and Safety Engineer, New York State Department of Transportation regarding Amish Traffic on State Route 38, Tioga County, N.Y.

We have been residents in Tioga County for 46 years on State Route 38, Berkshire, N.Y. We recently sold our farm and home to an Amish family. We are very pleased to see the numerous industrious Amish families moving into Tioga County.

Driving on State Route 38 with a tractor-trailer coming upon us, and an Amish horse drawn buggy traveling on the shoulder of the road was a frightening experience. The Amish are careful to drive on the shoulder, but the buggy is wide and two wheels straddle the white shoulder line. We are very concerned that accidents may occur with serious harm to people and horses.

We would greatly appreciate your facilitating the installations of several “Amish Horse and Buggy” safety signs along State Route 38 between Owego and Richford, N.Y.

Please let us know if you have any questions or if we may be of any assistance.

Thank you.

Sincerely yours,

April and George Swaney

Berkshire and Owego, N.Y.
