Readers’ Column for the week of May 27, 2018

You may call the Owego Pennysaver Readers’ Column at (607) 687-2378 24-hours a day, or e-mail comments to readerscolumn@stny.rr.com. We reserve the right to revise or reject any message.

There was an article in the press recently with nothing but joy in the way people are happy with the small amount of taxpayers that are now voting. Of course, the school board association, the State Education Department, the empire think tank center, and local school boards all think that is because they think the non-voters are fat, dumb and happy. I suspect that the small turnouts just might have something to do with the fact that if we are lucky enough to get the majority of the vote, then the board calls for a revote and WINS. So, why be frustrated and waste your time and fuel year after year? Just stay home or have a night out!

Many thanks to Keith Quick for donating his time and equipment to hang the new flag at the Candor Legion Field! Quick’s Logging and Tree Service, a local business, deserves your business. Call 343-0057.

St. Margaret Mary Church in Apalachin greatly appreciates those who follow the guidelines posted on the shed when donating. It is unfortunate that we have no choice but to discard unwanted items; please find other places at which to donate them, e.g. The Salvation Army or Open Door Mission. Thank you for your generosity in helping people in the U.S. and around the world. God bless!

Sounds like our house, exactly. Surplus of the little striped rodents! I got a “Hava-heart” live trap from Agway in Owego. Bait it with some peanut butter, they love it. When you get a “customer”, take it far enough away from your house that they can’t return. Over the course of three years, we’ve removed about two dozen of the critters.

This Memorial Day, May 28, is the 100th anniversary of the WWI Battle of Cantigny. The greatest bloodletting of American history was the WWI battle of Meuse-Argonne some 100 years ago. In the course of 46 days 26,000 soldiers died, 565 per day. WWI defines world history to this day. This Memorial and Veterans Day we should give some real thought about the world 25 Tioga sons bequeathed us.

I would like to thank the All Over Clover Kids 4 H Club from Newark Valley for the kind message and snack bags they prepared for the Rochester Ronald McDonald House. My daughter has been staying there while her daughter is at Strong Hospital. When you are mostly living at the hospital, grabbing a donated bag with something to drink and snacks is a lifesaver. We were so surprised and happy to see the note and that they were from Tioga County. Please know how appreciated those bags are. Thank you again.

What is the matter with humans today that we are so hateful towards one another? You see or hear about it each day in things like road rage, a hot-tempered person in a grocery store, a mass shooting somewhere, or right here in this column. People are so hateful towards other people that they really don’t even know personally. So much disrespect for fellow humans that it is no wonder that the children today mimic the same emotion that is all around them. People, you need to STOP this because you are adding fuel to the fire and it is getting way out of control. We need to learn to be kind and generous to one another and treat people the way we would want to be treated. Enough with the bashing of others and that includes any and all presidents. They are to be treated with respect and honor, right along with our military. God Bless America!

National Political Viewpoints

Does everyone remember when they told us how great the new tax plan would be for working folks? Well, now we know. Harley-Davidson just used their tax windfall to buy back $800 million dollars worth of stock, and close their Indiana plant – cutting 800 jobs and moving some production to Asia. There will be one real lucky beneficiary; the Trump family will save a billion dollars in inheritance taxes!

You’ve got to love Sara Sanders’ press conferences. Either she doesn’t know, can’t answer, or she will refer you to consul.

I highly doubt President Obama said he hates white people. And you asked if I could believe a president would speak that way? Do you know who Donald Trump is? He speaks of Elizabeth Warren as Pocahontas, Jeff Sessions as Mr. Magoo, immigrants are animals, and some come from [expletive removed] hole countries. That’s what I can’t beleive!

Readers complaining about high gas prices must have been out of the country during Omaha’s first four years. When W left office, the national average for a gallon of gas was 2.31. Under our dear leader’s watch (Obama), gas prices hit 3.61 in 2012 and 3.36 in 2014. Now I realize none of this is our dear leader’s fault, it’s all W’s. According to democrats, GWB is responsible for everything bad that happened in history. But don’t let the facts fool you.

People crowing about the Obama’s not being invited to the Royal wedding are overlooking an important clue. Diplomatic protocol would have required inviting the Trumps if the Obamas were invited. As the bridal party did not want President Trump there, they could not invite the Obamas. So the lack of an Obama invitation was caused by President Trump being persona non grata.

Once more we have a school shooting and a police officer dead. I say again, look at the record. Since God was taken out of school and religion de-emphasized, look at the record. It’s not guns that are the problem, it’s the attitude and up bringing of people, that’s the problem. I’d be willing to bet that Planned Parenthood is responsible for the death of more human beings than the N.R.A or anything to do with the N.R.A.!

Anyone who has been in the army knows about the tear gas training. It’s about learning gas mask usage. It has nothing to do with torture training.

Would the person making the assertion that Obama said he hates whites please provide the book title and page number do I can go see it for myself.

Record tax receipts don’t mean the debt didn’t increase. There were also record expenditures.

Obama has been vilified for the last 10 years, but now it’s disrespectful of the President to say negative things about Trump? Really? Don’t hold your breath waiting for the Democrats to start worshiping Trump.

~

The person that is pointing their finger at President Trump found the audacity to say your current trips to the gas pump is more costly than during the Obama administration? A simple Google search result from a government database: 2008-$3.51, 2009-$2.50, 2010-$2.94, 2011-$3.64, 2012-$3.69, 2013- $3.53, 2014-$3.47, 2015-$2.49. You really should do your homework before you rant and show your ignorance.

When John McCain steps down from the Senate there is a good chance the seat will flip to a Republican.

Mr. Trump and Mr. Giuliani just can’t get their facts straight. One lies and the other swears to it – even after it’s been proven false. Mr. Mueller has charged 22 people and have found five guilty so far, but yet it’s still a witch hunt. Just keep tweeting.
