The OFA Girls Varsity softball team has been proving their talent in the 2018 season.

Currently 4-4, the team is playing in a very competitive division, and as Coach Kerri Lavender explained, “We are playing all Class AA and A teams as a Class B team,” adding, “This allows us to be challenged and also prepares us physically and mentally for the post season.”

The go-to pitcher on the mound this season is junior, Chelsea Sellars. Sellars played a key role in three recent games; the April 13 game (Johnson City), April 18 game (Vestal), and May 2 game (Johnson City).

Sellars earned the win on all three games, and Lavender commented that she has continued to improve as the season progresses. Sellars has also contributed with her hitting skills.

Sellars pitching statistics in these three games were: April 13: 8 hits, 5 strikeouts, 3 walks – Final Score: 9-5; April 18: 10 hits, 6 strikeouts, 2 walks, 9 innings pitched – Final Score: 8-7; and May 2: 5 hits (a two-hitter until the last inning), 5 strikeouts, 1 walk – 7 innings pitched – Final Score 10-5.

For Miki Worzel, a junior catcher, her solo home run during the April 18 Vestal game gave Owego the edge to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh inning. Worzel’s efforts forced extra innings.

Lavender shared, “Miki is a work horse and always gives one hundred percent, and also has a never-give-up attitude.”

Lavender explained that the OFA Girls Varsity softball team is young, and with only one senior departing after the 2018 season, she is excited to see what future seasons will bring.

Lavender commented, “This group stands out amongst the many teams I have coached because of their positive attitude and camaraderie.”

Lavender also said that she expects the team will fulfill a team goal, and that is to make it to the post season.

“We will give some solid Class B teams a run for their money,” Lavender said.

And as for Chelsea Sellars, she has been playing ball since the age of six. Along with some of her teammates, the young women got a solid start playing in the Owego Little League, which is a positive nod to the organization.
