Waverly High School holds successful Active Shooter Drill

Waverly Intermediate, Middle, and High Schools successfully completed an active shooter drill that involved multiple agencies from the Greater Valley region. The responding agencies included the Waverly Police Department, the New York State Police, the Athens Township Police Department, the Tioga County Sherriff’s Office, and the Greater Valley EMS, as well as the Waverly-Barton Fire Department. Also involved were student members of the Valley’s emergency response teams and high school students serving as actors, simulating various injury scenarios.

Waverly High School’s Resource Officer, Ben Hettinger, stated, “This drill allows us to take a proactive approach to an unfortunate reality in today’s society. By having a multi-agency response, personnel are able to coordinate efforts in order to minimize response time and maximize response efficiency. It also allows them to understand the building and the procedures that are in place prior to their arrival on scene.”

As part of ongoing security efforts in the Waverly Central School District, district residents will vote May 15 on a proposition allocating funds for vestibules at all district buildings. These vestibules will be configured to include a secure, single point of entry to the school.
