The Tioga United Way held its annual meeting and awards dinner at Shepard Hills Country Club on Thursday, April 26, in Waverly, N.Y. The ceremony started off with a reflective speech by the ‘E.F. Hutton of Tioga County’, Ron Dougherty.  

Dougherty stated, “The money being donated is used to improve the quality of life for people in Tioga County.”  

Each partner and community agency in attendance took a moment to thank the Tioga United Way donors and commented on the impact their donations have made to the people they serve.

Upon receiving her award, Julie Lovelass, owner of the Owego Kitchen, shared her own personal struggle as a single mother of three who had to take advantage of a food pantry in Oneonta, stating, “I want you to know that the people you are serving might not appear thankful, but one day, they’ll remember that their lives were changed because of you.”

Jeri Sarrge, owner of Realty Solutions Group, was elected to Tioga United Way’s Board of Directors. The slate of officers elected for one year is Dorothy Richter, Gilbert Knapp, Sherry Torbert and Robert Jensen. Board members elected for three year terms included Buffie Arhbal, Kristin Barton, Dale Larson, Cate Pichany, Dorothy Richter and Sherry Torbert.

Julie Lovelass, owner of the Owego Kitchen, reminded the agencies that they are making a difference.

Awards were given to major contributors to include Lockheed Martin and employees, IBM employees and retirees, Tioga State Bank and employees, Tioga Downs Corporate and employees, Chemung Canal Trust Company, Tioga County employees, Julie and Ike Lovelass, Guthrie Healthcare Systems, Cheryl and Steve May, Kim and Adam Weitsman, Dryden Mutual Insurance Company and Visions Federal Credit Union.
