Readers’ Column for the week of April 29, 2018

You may call the Owego Pennysaver Readers’ Column at (607) 687-2378 24-hours a day, or e-mail comments to readerscolumn@stny.rr.com. We reserve the right to revise or reject any message.

Even numbered houses are usually on the right hand side of a street and odd numbers on the left. My street, Delphine Street in Owego, is different. The even numbers are on the left, with one exception, No. 133. The odd numbers are on the right and also with one exception, No. 118, which is my house number. Can anyone explain this oddity?

I live in Apalachin and we have trouble with our mail. We get others and they get ours. We called the post office and they said the mail is presorted in Syracuse, and they don’t do their own. I’d love to go back to the old way, but technology has struck again to mess up things. I’d love to go back because technology isn’t always what it is cracked up to be.

I thought you might be interested in knowing something I do instead of taking pain medication for my back. I have fractured bones in my back, and I also take something because I have epilepsy instead of the medication they provide for me, which causes side effects as far as anxiety and blackouts and a number of other side effects. I also take this same medication for insomnia; I have insomnia once in a while and I sleep like a baby after taking this. It’s called marijuana; it’s illegal, but I must take it and it works great for me. I just need Governor Cuomo to read this and legalize it. I don’t drive, that’s the worst thing you can do. It’s a lot better than the medication the doctors provide for you.

~

In regards to the U.S. Postal service. You aren’t the only one in Apalachin that is having trouble. We mail out bills and it takes forever to get there, if they get them at all. We don’t get all of our mail that is supposed to be delivered to us. I don’t know what the problem is. I do think some of the problem is that they want you to pay online, and do everything on the computer and mail it online; and forget the stamps, they keep raising the price. The service does not get any better and I’m not sure where the problem lies. There’s definitely a mail problem and it’s not just here, it’s all over.

~

I’m calling to agree with the person who has a problem with Broome Developmental Center being closed to special needs individuals for addiction treatment. Maybe there’s more money to be made through this, but your still letting a lot of people go who need treatment, sending them out to the communities with people who just want money and don’t want to take care of them.

Free denim loveseat, has a few spots but in very good shape. Very sturdy and it’s free. Call 659-3871.

I see where the Town of Owego Highway Department hasn’t changed much in eight years. They’ve got some new personnel in there. The thing is, it doesn’t matter what you know it’s who you know.

~

Isn’t it about time where we put Common Core in the dumpster where it belongs? The only ones making any profit on it seems to be the printer.

~

If we thought Time Warner Cable service was bad, Spectrum is worse. We now have four channels that are blank, no service because they are working on a contract. They have moved our local WSKG station to a higher tier, and if we want that station we have to pay more money.

I’m glad to see the new mayor is starting up the column in the Pennysaver on a regular basis, I hope. This week’s was very informative and I am glad to see it restarted.

~

It’s so refreshing to see the new mayor, Mike Baratta, wearing a button down shirt and a tie to lead the Village Board of Trustees meetings. It’s also very disappointing to see others wearing hats with advertising on them and wearing hats during the United States Pledge of Allegiance. My hat is off to Mayor Baratta for changing the dress code. It’s a refreshing thing to see happen.

~

Hey, did everybody get their new Owego Village Sewer bill? New faces, same old nasty over priced bill.

~

This is to the owner of the little Chihuahuas of different colors that run all over everybody’s yards. I’m tired of them coming in my yard and pooping, and then me stepping in it and having to clean it up. I know you are new to the neighborhood, but there is a leash law, even though everybody else in this town seems to let their dogs run loose too, crapping in people’s yards; but they are just annoying rats to most people, so could you please keep them in your own yard?

Before all the rhubarb disappears off the local market, where can I score a bushel or two? Someone is intent on depriving the rest of us rhubarb lovers our yearly dose of it. I, for one, will not stand for it this year.

~

It’s a well-known fact that every migratory hobo coming north has a pigeon on each shoulder. Trekking over the Hazelton Hump takes it toll, but for the ones that make it over, Owego is pigeon heaven.

~

Ah, yes. The good ole days. April 17, 1918, (as reported in a Binghamton paper): “Five runaways from Scranton are unhappy over their capture. Five very disgruntled youths sat on one of the trucks of the Lackawanna station yesterday to await the train for Scranton, which was to carry them back home. The oldest boy said he was 19 and the youngest said he was eight. They said that the Endicott-Johnson factory appealed to them as a decent place to work in and would be far better than the coal mines of Scranton.”

~

I’d like to commend Mayor Baratta on initiating “Operation Clean Sweep” and getting the street sweeper cleaning our streets. It takes three or four weeks to get the winter accumulation of dirt off of the roads, and starting early will help to get them cleaner faster.

~

Can anyone tell me who to call in the Town of Spencer regarding junk and junk cars. The Town is a mess. The Trailer parks have garbage piled around the trailers. It looks like a third world nation. No one knows how to contact the new code guy and the Board members I have talked to don’t seem to care.

National Political Viewpoints

Our illustrious governor now says he’s an undocumented citizen; how did he ever get to be governor? He might not even have voting privileges! There’s something wrong with that guy. Vote him out. He’s killing the state.

~

Talk about blind and absurd crybaby partisanship. The Democrat losers who previously voted for Mike Pompeo for CIA Director will not vote for him now as Secretary of State. Pompeo was first in his class at West Point and at Harvard and has already met with North Korean UN. The feckless and perfidious Democrats should hide their head in shame.

~

As far as President Trump having steaming relationships with women, who cares? That just proves to me that he’s more like just another average red-blooded American male. It’s been happening since Adam and Eve. Right?

~

I think they should reinstate the military draft so the college students and the teenagers would have something to really cry about.

~

Hillary is at it again. She just announced her newest reason for losing the election. She has so many reasons I’ve lost count. She may have forgotten her own words, that the election loser should graciously accept the election loss and move on. Why even a child would have moved on by now.

~

Trump is a performer, a liar and a salesman. That is not a good thing for this country. When will people wake up to this? It’s not funny! God help us all.

~

It’s unfortunate that some people do not understand the election process of popular vote verses Electoral College. Fortunately our founding fathers did and realized if popular vote ruled, the states of New York and California would select our president each time. Did you not realize that Romney won popular vote but lost the election? Please read up on your American History. It will explain it all to you.

~

In response, I support Mr. Trump because he is not a politician. All the scandals now that are being uncovered, the scandal Obama said didn’t happen during his term. If Hillary had been elected we would not have known any of it.

~

I find it upsetting that people still do not understand the real cause for the violence we are too often experiencing. A van, a car, a knife, a gun in the hands of the wrong person is extremely dangerous. The protests accomplish nothing while wasting valuable time in working toward the real problem.

~

I read in your paper, and a caller commented, “I would like one simple explanation as to why anyone would support Donald Trump. I just don’t get it, just one simple explanation.” Well here’s your explanation, voters will vote Republican no matter what clown is running, even if it’s a dictator. Here’s your explanation, these people don’t think, they just see “R” and they go nuts. If mommies and daddies are republican, their great grand daddies and grand mommies are Republican, it’s a family tradition. It goes without thinking, any type of thought whatsoever. There’s your answer. There are people that are just blind and you can’t explain anything to them. All they come up with is fake news, fake news.

~

God bless Michael Bloomberg, even though he’s a Republican he cares about this planet and this United States. Let’s hope the rest of the Republicans follow suit.

~

Boy, George W. and Obama have to be just cringing to think that we’ve got this low life worthless individual in office now. The two past presidents were good presidents. Must be so sad for them.

~

There is no bigger idiot in the entire United States than Donald Trump, our president. It’s horrifying!

~

I think they should have term limits for governors like they do the president.

~

Everyone who voted for Trump should boycott these freaks in show business and TV, like Joy Behar and that punk Panaro, where it would hurt them in the pocket instead of making them wealthy. Then we will see how they think.

~

Donald Trump didn’t become president for our country; he became president for himself, for the prestige. He’s looking out for himself. He didn’t need the money; he’s a billionaire.

~

Makes you wonder. Bill Cosby goes to prison for maybe 30 years for sexual misconduct. Bill Clinton prances around annoying us with his presence, gets paid big bucks for speeches hardly anyone listens to, and is free as a bird, having been responsible for much the same behavior. Why the difference?

~

So Mr. Trump thinks taking the Fifth Amendment is for people who have something to hide. I wonder what Michael Cohen is hiding. You can’t have it both ways, Mr. Trump.

~

Wow! Watching Trump’s behavior with French President Macron and then on Fox and Friends this morning convinces me once again that two out of every five Trump supporters are just as stupid as the other three. Well done, rubes.

~

Can someone tell me more about Tom Reed’s Medical Debt collection business? That would explain why he’s so against access to affordable healthcare! He makes money of bankrupting families.

~

When we hear the words “classified documents”, we picture plans for some super secret weapon. A friend who served years in Army intelligence tells me that this is not the case. Every year, hundreds of thousands of documents are stamped “classified” for various reasons. For example, when the President travels most details will be, for security reasons, “classified”. Like all such documents they will remain so for ten years, even though their information is harmless once the trip is over. Many more classified documents are created when someone is trying to cover an embarrassing mistake (e.g. ordering torpedoes instead of toilet paper). Thousands of federal employees, civilian and military, have the authority to stamp something “classified” and they do it with wild abandon. So next time you hear that someone has “leaked classified material”, remember it may be President Trump’s dinner menu.

~

Bill Clinton WAS impeached. Just not convicted. And how many people demanding a stop to Trump-bashing had no qualms about bashing Obama?

~

The reader that wants to see the FBI invade Clinton’s home needs to ask themselves how the FBI got Hillary’s server. While they are at it, they could research how many times the Clintons have been investigated over the past 30 years with the only finding being an illicit affair.

~

The Democrats need money badly. How pathetic is it when Tom Barrett, from the DNC, appears on MSNBC talking about suing the Russians, the Trump campaign, and others for meddling in the campaign, which we all know was in fact the Democratic Party meddling in the campaign. The facts are slowly coming out about the Clintons and all their people working for them. Instead of CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, and NBC talking about important news like the economy doing good, talks with diplomatic rulers, jobs, health care, all things that they should be talking about and are more important to the people, they are all talking about Stormy Daniels, Russian women peeing on each other (which never happened), and James Comey’s fiction book. Wake up and realize we want real news of things that will help us to live and survive, and not the trash you are all harping on. The Stormy Daniels scandal, if true, happened over 10 years ago and was consensual. Also, if true, it did not occur in the White house, unlike Clinton’s scandal, which did occur while he was the President and was not consensual, it included rape. The Russian story never happened and was made up. James Comey is contradicting the things he wrote in his book and says different things on TV. The interview he had with George S. of GMA was pathetic because George never asked important questions. Please people, let’s work with President Trump and not turn into a dictatorship like the foreign countries live by.

~

I too would like one good reason why anyone would vote for Mr. Trump. Just one justified reason.

~

In response to last week’s comment about Stormy Daniels being a gold digger, that must mean Mr. Trump is a choirboy.

~

If there’s one good thing I can say about Mr. Trump, it’s that he’s one hell of a salesman. Just be careful what you buy.

~

So sad loosing Barbara Bush, such a special first lady. Thank you Clintons and Obamas for attending the funeral of a very special person. Guess Mr. Trump was too busy golfing.

  1. A big shout out of thanks to John of Van Etten and JD of Candor, two motorcycle Samaritans who stopped to help an old guy with a flat tire on Southside Drive. If you know these guys tell them KC says Thanks!
