Volunteers play a vital role in the Hospice program at Lourdes by providing care and support for terminally ill patients, their families and friends. Lourdes is offering a training program for those interested in working as volunteers with Lourdes Hospice. Volunteers possess respect for life, a positive outlook, sensitivity, compassion, a sense of humor and the willingness to help others.
A training series will be held on Tuesdays and Fridays from April 10 to May 11, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Hospice office located at 4102 Old Vestal Rd. in Vestal.
A number of topics are covered during the training including the history and philosophy of Hospice Care, Death-Grief-Losses, communication skills and psychological issues.
After completing the training and requirements, volunteers have the opportunity to assist in a number of areas including home care, delivery and errands, meals, bereavement, nursing homes, inpatient, office duties and much more.
Call (607) 584-9159 to reserve your place in the class. Each participant must complete a brief pre-training interview.
