On Saturday, April 7, the Ti-Ahwaga Players will present The Salt City Jazz Collective and Rick Pedro for an 8 p.m. performance at the Ti-Ahwaga Theatre, located on Delphine Street in Owego.

Rick Pedro will open the show with an infectious blend of patriotic standards, ragtime barnburners, and modern classics fused with his unique stage presence, humor and animation. In concert, Rick comes alive, thrilling his audiences with fast-paced melodies, soulful harmonies and uproarious comedy.

The night continues with The Salt City Jazz Collective under the direction of bandleader Angelo Candela.

The group was formed in 1995 by Syracuse University Jazz professors who enlisted area Jazz musicians/educators for the new project. They quickly found an outlet for live performances at the Syracuse Suds Factory, located in Armory Square, and have established a group of loyal followers. This is their 23rd year of performing on the first Wednesday of every month at the Suds Factory.

Other performances / venues have included Colgate University, Hamilton College, Jazz and Music fests in Syracuse, Utica, Rome, Fulton, Cazenovia, Corning, Auburn, Norwich and more.

The group has also worked with area high schools to present performances and clinics as part of promoting jazz education.

In addition to classic big band compositions, The Salt City Jazz Collective performs original works of group members Joe Riposo – Jazz professor emeritus at Syracuse University; Steve Brown – Jazz professor emeritus at Ithaca College; and Paul Merrill – current Jazz professor at Cornell University and Angelo Candela.

This Performance is Underwritten by Jim Franz and Hinman, Howard & Kattell, LLP; Joe Shortino and Southern Tier Environmental; Dr. Keith Nichols and MDVIP; Jan Nolis; Les Wagner and Wagner Lumber; Steve Rowell and Audio Classics; Kathy Nichols; Dean Smith and Scott Smith and Son; and Friends of Sonny DeWitt.
