The fourth annual Camp Ahwaga fundraiser is scheduled for Sunday, April 15, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Owego Middle School.

Competitive dance teams from Owego’s Kathy Hansen School of Dance (KHSOD) are the featured performers at the show, which will also include performances by special guests, pianist Rick Pedro, the Binghamton University Dance Team and the Owego Free Academy Select Choir.

Camp Ahwaga is a non-profit summer educational and recreational day program designed for children ages four to 21 with physical, mental and/or emotional disabilities.

Kathy Hansen School of Dance competitive teams performing at the fundraiser include youth ranging in age from first grade to senior year of high school.

Ashleigh Steele, Kayla Carter and Taya Hagerich are seasoned Kathy Hansen School of Dance dancers who will perform at the fundraiser show.

Taya, a dancer for 12 years whose favorite form of dance is hip-hop and Ashleigh, a dancer for eight years who enjoys tap along with Kayla, a dancer for five years who likes jazz the best, have all participated in the Camp Ahwaga fundraiser since its inception.

The dancers agreed that the main reason they are participating is to, “Raise money for Camp Ahwaga,” and, in addition, they enjoy helping other young people.

The fundraiser idea came about four years ago when Kathy Hansen School of Dance learned that a fellow dancer’s sibling attended Camp Ahwaga. Since then, the lead-in to the Kathy Hansen School of Dance competition season seemed the best time to hold the fundraiser, while also giving the dancers a platform to perform in front of a live audience and gear up for multiple competitions that take place in the late spring.

The dance season, which begins each September, consists of practicing ten hours or more per week, with focus on dance technique and choreography.

A requested donation of $5 per person with a maximum of $20 per family is asked. The fundraiser show also includes basket raffles and a 50/50. Light snacks will be available for purchase. All proceeds benefit Camp Ahwaga activities.
