Paw Prints

If you have recently called the Owego Veterinary Hospital, you may have heard the greeting, “Hello and Welcome to the Endless Mountain Owego Vet Center!”

Don’t panic! Don’t hang up! You have reached the right place! Owego Veterinary Hospital was recently acquired by the Endless Mountains Veterinary Group, a family owned practice who celebrated their 100th year in 2017, and is based in Rome, Pa. with other locations in Athens and Tunkhannock, Pa.

Just like the Owego Veterinary Hospital, The Endless Mountain group will continue to provide affordable, quality veterinary care for companion animals. All of the doctors will remain the same and they will soon be adding new faces to their staff.

It’s an exciting time for us as we transition through this period, so please stay tuned, and on to the column.

Question: What is the best way to trim my dog’s nails?

Answer: If you are a busy owner, the easiest way to trim your pup’s nails is to have someone else do them! Groomers, veterinary offices and mobile clinics have services that (for usually a low cost) provide nail trims for your pooch.

If you are attempting this feat at home, START EARLY! Play with your puppy’s toes! Entice them with cookies and treats. Trimming the tip of the nail every few weeks is usually the easiest way to keep their nails short.

If the nails are white, stay clear of the pink center that contains the nerve and blood vessel. If the nails are black, flipping them over can sometimes clue you in as to where to cut.

If you nick the quick, don’t panic! Dab some styptic powder or cornstarch onto the bleeding nail and smother your pooch in kisses and cookies to help them forget! Don’t fear, the bleeding does stop and your pup will forgive.
