Readers’ Column for the week of March 18, 2018

You may call the Owego Pennysaver Readers’ Column at (607) 687-2378 24-hours a day, or e-mail comments to readerscolumn@stny.rr.com. We reserve the right to revise or reject any message.

“Fresh food, microbes (that’s right, germs) and elements of nature – soil, sunshine, water, and fresh air – make children resilient and prevent or reverse their illness. In ‘The Dirt Cure,’ Shetreat-Klein reveals the shocking contents of children’s food and how it’s greatly harming their bodies. She also offers solutions, including an organic diet rich in fruits and veggies, and how to encourage your child to get out in nature and play in the dirt.” “The Dirt Cure: Why Human Health Depends on Soil Health,” by Julie Wilson.

Jim Bodenheim lost a championship game the other night to North Carolina, but he showed a lot more composure than the head coach of North Carolina who ripped his expensive suit coat in two when he was upset by a call of the official. He sure set a bad example for the young men; he is supposed to be an example for them to follow. I am sure that the paying spectators were not proud of him either.

I agree with the comments about the outdated holiday decorations. As I walk the downtown area of Owego I see un-kept properties with trash, dead leaves, unpainted exteriors, etc. The streets are disgusting. I was embarrassed when a friend I was walking with said, “Well, it is Owego.” There are definitely homeowners and businesses doing a great job, but they are unfortunately becoming the minority. If there’s a group organizing a village cleanup, I’ll be there!

~

I found a great way to get a robo-caller to hang up on you. “Tell them you died!” It works every time!

~

I, too, also enjoyed the show that the OFA students put on called Hello, Dolly. I also wonder if they have any DVD’s of that presentation. I certainly would be interested in buying one if they did. It would sure make a great fundraiser!

I would like to say I am getting sick and tired of trying to dodge the traffic when going by the Dunkin Donuts place from either way. They should be made to park in the new parking lot and have no parking in front of Dunkin Donuts at all. They don’t watch when they’re backing out and they don’t care where they pull in, as long as they get in there.

~

Please, the Pennysaver has got to limit the amount of time and space these callers take up. Some of these callers call in and go on and on, and don’t say a thing! I’m sure many people don’t even read those big long diatribes anyway. Limit the amount of the comments!

I would like to know if Tops and Price Chopper have a delivery service for the elderly and the handicapped in Owego. I think they should.

I was under the impression that last fall the Town of Owego superintendent got re-elected. I would like to know when he is going to start to work.

I’m tired of winter. Bring on spring!

Happy 36th birthday to Stephen Kirk. Sorry for being late as always, but as they say – better late than never. Love Dad. P.S. Where have you been?

Could it really be that the Waterman Conservation Education Center signed a “fracking” gas lease on land donated to the organization? From what has since circulated around numerous coffee tables and wee-morning conversations, according to Waterman’s 2018 Annual Report, the lease was signed in early January 2017. If so, why was there no member or community input? The decision opposes Waterman’s mission to promote conservation education and a vision statement declaring unity to “prepare the next generation with the knowledge and skills to seek sound, balanced decisions that maintain public health and the environmental quality of our community and the world.” The precedent set is that any Waterman lands without scheduled programming, and therefore taxed, are now a signature away from another such closed-door deal. And you wanted to preserve what, you say?

National Political Viewpoints

Mr. Trump says he enjoys chaos. He has lost 43 percent of his White House members. He fired John McEntee, personal assistant, for financial crimes and lack of a security clearance, and yet is hiring him back as senior adviser for his 2020 presidential campaign. He’s the only president who can be on both sides of the fence at once.

~

We never know which Mr. Trump is speaking; he seems to be on both sides of issues. He is just unable to take a stand.

~

I agree, we need a wall; build it around Trump and I’ll pay for it.

~

It demonstrates the ignorant, emotional approach to gun control really, really well. The Liberals want to ban the AR-15, but the Ruger Mini-14 is very similar in function, power, etc., it just looks conventional instead of “scary,” as they want to label the AR-15. This serves to illustrate the whole misguided approach to the gun control idea. Go by looks and emotion, instead of fact and logic.

~

Our country is unraveling at the seams. The white house is in total chaos and is losing staff members weekly. No one can work together. Mr. Trump wouldn’t know the truth if it hit him head on. He admits to lying to Canada about trading between the countries. Said he made it up as he went along. How much more can America stand?

~

Cuomo’s dedication to green energy couldn’t be any more hypocritical. He just sold out our local construction firms to Big Union by forcing “prevailing wage” law down your throat. Now our local non-union businesses will be frozen out of subsidized New York State green energy projects. All such projects are subsidized. Things were working before so Cuomo had to fix it (that is put the fix in). Does Cuomo work for you or do you work for Cuomo and gang?

~

Anyone have any ideas what it would take for Hillary to just go away? I get so tired of her witchy looks and her screechy voice.

~

President Trump says that the way to stop school violence is to lock up the mentally ill. This from a 71 year old man who dyes his hair yellow, paints his face orange, locks himself in his bedroom at eight o’clock and appoints a crack head as chief economic advisor.

~

Mainstream media tells us that there is nothing but chaos in the Trump administration, but they must be referencing the creation of thousands of jobs, lower employment, tax cuts, defeat of Isis, soaring stock market and high consumer confidence. So in response I say give us more chaos!

~

The reason for this country’s mass shootings is this. Americans raised males to express only these two feelings, rage and lust. We need to examine our entire country’s morals.

~

Go Stormy Daniels! I’m on your side and I’m a 65-year-old woman who has more respect for you than I do Donald Trump, because you are at least honest about who you are.

~

To Mr. know-it-all, the AR15 is no an assault weapon – period! If you think it is you must know nothing about guns. A gun’s only purpose is to put a bullet out the end of a barrel. What you do with the gun is up to you. The Democrats are well on their way to legalizing all drugs. You say a person has to take the drug to kill him; you also have to use the gun to kill because it can’t do it on its own. Maybe you should learn a little bit about guns before running your mouth.

Illegal scandal is what’s being uncovered right now. It’s so huge with so many people involved it’s hard to keep it straight. Ironically it all happened and started on Obama’s watch. I agree with last week’s caller, Obama wins for the most scandals while doing nothing for the American people.

~

I think it’s time for someone to figure out how to get that moron out of the White House and his crew before it’s too late.

~

I’d like to make two comments – one about daylight savings time, if some other states have got it going why can’t New York State do it? Two, I’d like to make a comment about the wall that Donald Trump is trying to build. If he wants it built, why can’t he put his own money in? He makes enough money, so let him pay for it instead of us taxpayers who are on Social Security, and that are on a strict income.

~

I think it’s a shame Rex Tillerson is no longer going to be Secretary of State. I think he sincerely cares about this United States and wants to be a good Secretary of State. I think Donald Trump definitely does not care about this United States. He cares about Donald Trump. The man is a lunatic! He needs to be impeached.

~

Trump has tarnished the White House forever and ever. Not good for the United States. Can’t people see that?

~

Now think about it. Trump knows how to spend money that is not his, and if he thinks this wall of any sort or height is going to control drugs and the system of getting into our country, he is one sorry [expletive removed] man because the communication system is so great even Lexis can burst out laughing on your kitchen table. Will you please print this and see how many young people today that have Lexis can comprehend that fact that she is repeating what we tell her to do? You can bet there is a system that she is telling to another system. We are not complete dummies.

In addition to New York Governor Cuomo wasting millions trying to bring jobs to New York, which so far has just wasted New York taxpayer money, we have Attorney General Eric Schneiderman bringing a case against people who are pro-life and Christians who are counseling outside an abortion clinic in New York City. A person to testify happens to Mary Lou Greenberg, which works with the abortion clinic. She’s also a revolutionary, communist, U.S.A. spokesperson, which does want to overthrow the United States Government, but her so-called evidence was proven that she was lying. Come on Eric, don’t you have something better to do?
