New York State Maple Weekend is SAPpening in Tioga County!

Maple Syrup has been a locally made product in Tioga County for generations. Sweetrees Maple and Hamley’s Maple will have family-friendly activities for the two 2018 New York State Maple Weekends, March 17 and 18, and March 24 and 25.

Sweetrees Maple, located at 761 Glen Rd. in Berkshire, will be open all four days from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for tours of the sugar shack and sugar bush, demonstrations, samples, and sales of a variety of maple products. Kids and adults will love learning about maple trees, seeing the “maple highway” that brings the sap from the sugar bush to the sugar shack, and tasting sweet treats like maple cotton candy.

Sweetrees Maple uses state-of-the-art equipment to make syrup from sap collected from 2,000 trees. Their wood pellet boiler can make up to 125 gallons of syrup an hour and they also use a UV filter and reverse osmosis during processing. Owners Ruth and Dan Beasley installed solar panels to enhance the sustainability of their operations.

Just a few miles down the road in Berkshire, N.Y., visitors can enjoy “SAPpening” activities on Saturday, March 24, at the Berkshire Community Hall, Library, and the Volunteer Station.

The fun begins with a pancake breakfast, serving Sweetrees Maple syrup, from 8 to 11 a.m. Registration for a 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk opens at 8 a.m. and the run begins at 9 a.m. Adults and kids can also enjoy a Craft Fair and Family Craft Projects beginning at 9 a.m.

At Hamley’s Maple located at 70 Frost Hollow Rd., Barton, N.Y., enjoy maple demonstrations and Hamley’s celebrated pancake breakfast (free with donation suggested). Visitors can also tour a historic, one-room schoolhouse on the Hamley’s property and experience what it was like to be a student there.

Sweetrees Maple and Hamley’s Maple showcase the spirit of agriculture in Tioga County, a blend of tradition and innovation. Visitors to these farms will travel through beautiful countryside and charming towns for a unique and authentic experience, and top-quality, real maple syrup.
