The Tioga County Business Services Team hosted their fourth annual Tioga County Job Fair on Wednesday, March 7, at the Owego Treadway Inn and Conference Center. The event helped connect job seekers with employers and employment opportunities in the region.

A total of 109 employers participated at the event. According to Sheri McCall, manager of the Tioga Employment Center, about 450 job seekers registered at the main desk during the four-hour event.

Employment opportunities featured included entry level to professional positions, and nearly every type of business was represented. From manufacturing, warehouse and laborers, to education-related positions, tradesmen, engineers and computer and medical field professionals, among others, job openings were plentiful.

McCall explained, “A wide variety of employers participated from around the region. Employers told me that they were also pleased with the steady pace of job seekers,” adding, “For job seekers, there was something for everyone.”

McCall commented that the current unemployment rate is 5.1 percent.

More than ever before, employers utilize online applications to locate candidates for job openings, so the fair was an excellent opportunity for job seekers to meet and network with employer representatives in person.

McCall shared, “I received positive feedback from both job seekers and employers, many of who were pleased with the chance to talk and interact in person.”

In addition to large job fairs, the Tioga Employment Center also supports the area in other ways. For example, they hosted a “pop-up” job fair just before Christmas for individuals impacted by the Sanmina plant closing, which was announced in early December. From that event, McCall said about 60 individuals were connected with new employment.

A good number of Sanmina employees attended the March 7 job fair as well, some whose employment has ended, and others who will lose employment within the next few months.

McCall also said that weather conditions might have impacted the turnout for this year’s event.

Job seekers unable to attend the event can reach out to the Tioga Employment Center, located at 1062 Route 38 in Owego, or call (607) 687-8483.

The Employment Center will post a list of jobs on their website, newyork.us.jobs, which is the same list that job seekers received upon registration at the Career Fair. In addition, job seekers can Follow the Tioga Employment Center on Facebook to receive updates.
