Owego Rotary to welcome the Dean of BU Decker School of Nursing for their evening program

The Owego Rotary Club is pleased to announce special guest Dr. Mario Ortiz, Dean of Binghamton University’s Decker School of Nursing, for the March 6 Tuesday evening program.   

Dr. Mario Ortiz will share the vision for the future of the Decker School, which will move to the new health and sciences campus in Johnson City that is slated to be complete in the fall of 2020. 

Programs are planned to expand to include speech language pathology, audiology, occupational therapy and physical therapy. Dr. Ortiz has been the Dean of the Decker School since July 2016.

Dean Ortiz has taught graduate and undergraduate courses in the areas of community health nursing, family nursing, research and theory, and nursing leadership and management. 

Ortiz is a board certified community / public health nurse specialist and family nurse practitioner. He uses nurse-led patient-centered medical homes as a model of care to lead community health centers, to focus patient-centered care in the community, and to guide policy development through national organizations focused on care for the underserved, the homeless, and nurse managed centers.

Ortiz has worked in both acute care and community-based settings with experience in various roles as a staff nurse through administration. 

Dean Ortiz earned bachelor’s degrees in nursing and in the history of the arts, as well as a master’s degree in nursing from Valparaiso University. He also earned a PhD in nursing from Loyola University Chicago.  

This event will be at the Owego Treadway Banquet and Conference Center Williamsburg room and is open to the public. Social hour is at 5:30 p.m. and dinner, for a cost of $16, is at 6:30 p.m.
