Red Cross opens shelter in Tioga County

With over 800 still without power in Tioga County, N.Y., volunteers from the American Red Cross are operating a shelter at Owego Free Academy, located at 1 Sheldon Guile Blvd. in Owego.

The shelter is being established at the request of the Tioga County Office of Emergency Services. Additionally, the Southern Tier Chapter continues to operate a shelter at Windsor High School, 1191 Route 79,  in coordination with Broome County.

Area residents affected by power outages, winter storm and other incidents are welcome to either stay at the shelters or stop by the facilities, as volunteers are providing food, water, comfort and support.

Anyone evacuating to a Red Cross shelter should bring essential items for each member of the family:

    • Prescriptions and emergency medications
    • Foods that meet unusual dietary requirements
    • Extra clothing, hygiene supplies and other comfort items
    • Supplies needed for children and infants, such as diapers, formula and toys
    • Special items for family members who are elderly or disabled
    • Chargers for any electronic devices you bring with you
    • Books, games and other ways to entertain your family and yourself

People can download the Red Cross Emergency App for instant access to winter storm and other disaster safety tips, as well real-time weather alerts for their area and where loved-ones live. The app is available to download for free in app stores or at redcross.org/apps
