Opinion: Let’s get books into the hands of children

Dear Editor,

Family Reading Partnership of Owego Apalachin would like to thank the Owego Apalachin community for its support over the past eight years. Our mission is to get books into the hands of children, and without your help, we wouldn’t be able to do that.

Thanks to grants from the various charitable funds in the area, we have been able to distribute new books to children for their birthdays, as a welcome to school, at doctor visits, and as presents at the holidays.

But another major focus of our efforts is to redistribute gently used books to children through our Bright Red Bookshelf program. We collect and re-circulate gently used books at Owego Elementary School, Apalachin Elementary School, WIC in Owego, Cornell Cooperative Extension at the Tioga County Office Building, Head Start at Abide in the Vine, and at the Tioga County Health and Human Services Building.

If your children or grandchildren have outgrown the books that you have in your home, would you please donate them to us at any of the above places? That way they will stay in our community and be available for other families who can use them.

Sincerely,

Joan Davis

Family Reading Partnership of Owego Apalachin member
