Guest Editorial: From our young readers

The following letters are from students in Miss J. Hochberg’s third grade class at Nathan T. Hall School in Newark Valley.

The students are studying persuasive writing in connection to the environment, and were challenged to think of a solution to a problem they identified in their school or community.

Her goal was to get the students to think about the community and see themselves as a citizen. They also practiced letter writing and typing.

Dear Pennysaver,

I want people to stop drinking and driving. You should listen to me because people die from drinking and driving. The first reason is people break body parts. People might have babies or kids in the car. People crash into each other.

Sincerely,

Caydn

Dear Pennysaver,

I think people should stop doing drugs and smoking because it hurts the world and kids. It is killing people and it is bad for people. Drugs are stupid and bad.

Sincerely,

Cereniti Griffith

Dear Pennysaver,

I think people should stop smoking because you can die from smoking. My first reason is you can ago in the hospital or die. My second reason is you can hurt your lungs. My third reason is you can hurt your body badly.

Sincerely,

Hayden Pratt

Dear Pennysaver,

I think people should follow the speed limit. I think people should follow it because they might crash. My other reason is because I don’t want them to get pulled over. My last reason is so people don’t die. That is why I want people to follow the speed limit.

Sincerely,

Wyatt Welch

Dear Pennysaver,

I think it’s better to have non-power lawn mowers because today’s lawn mowers take gas, oil and cost a lot of money. It pollutes the air, but non-power lawn mowers don’t pollute anything and don’t cost a lot of money; you can make different designs, like you can add a bag on the back of it. That’s why I think it’s better to have non-power lawn mowers.

Sincerely,

Michael Webster

Dear Pennysaver,

I think that we should keep the streets and sidewalks clean. I think we should do so because it could pollute the river water, killing fish. I also think so because it could end up being bad to our health. Finally I think that animals could mistake it as food, being harmed if they eat it. That is why I think we should keep the streets and sidewalks clean.

Sincerely,

Joseph Jerabek
