Tioga United Way is seeking entries for its 3rd Annual Adult Spelling Bee. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, March 24, at the Owego Elks Lodge located at 223 Front St. in Owego.

The event, sponsored by Lockheed Martin, is a fundraiser that supports 34 agencies that depend, in part, on the Tioga United Way to fund their programs and activities. The spelling bee also helps bring attention to one of the issues that Tioga United Way supports – Literacy.

“The Adult Spelling Bee is a lot of fun and it draws attention to the wonderful work of our agencies, including Literacy Volunteers and the Family Reading Partnership,” said Carolyn Palladino, executive director of the Tioga United Way.

Groups of two to six individuals will comprise each team. Anyone wishing to enter or sponsor a team can do so at tiogaunitedway.com or by calling (607) 687-4028.

The cost to enter a team is $100, and teams are encouraged to dress in costume. Once given the word, each team writes the word down on a piece of paper and it is then submitted to a panel of judges. This way, no one has to stand and speak into a microphone.

Anyone wishing to register a team must do so by March 9.

Tioga United Way’s mission is to provide hope and opportunity for the community. If you would like to join the 2017-18 campaign or make a contribution, visit tiogaunitedway.com or call their office at (607) 687-4028.
