After 15 years of absence, Broome County is once again home to African Lions. A new cub recently came to reside at Animal Adventure Park, home of world-famous giraffes April, Oliver and Tajiri. There has not been a lion in Broome County since 2002.

The female cub is 3 months old, and will be called Bisa, a name of African origin meaning “greatly loved.” She is the first to arrive of the pride being assembled from across the country, which will yield viable genetic diversity for future preservation program initiatives.

Lions are currently categorized as vulnerable to extinction, which is just one level below endangered. That’s why Jordan Patch, owner of Animal Adventure Park, says species preservation is the overarching purpose of this addition to the park.

“The future of these magnificent feline carnivores is in jeopardy due to the continued exploitation of natural environments, poaching and human encroachment,” Patch said. “Lions will have a safe home at Animal Adventure Park, where they will act as ambassadors for their species as we continue our mission of educating our visitors and online support base of the threats faced by wildlife, and the inevitable outcome from this continued destructive path.”

Animal Adventure is an interactive, educational animal park located in the hills of Harpursville, N.Y., which is 15 minutes outside of Binghamton, N.Y. The park’s mission is to communicate an appreciation for living things through the use of the human senses, and to educate guests about the lives of its animal ambassadors. Animal Adventure is federally licensed by the USDA, which ensures the same standards of care are met at zoos and aquariums in the United States. Zoologists, animal behaviorists, biologists, educators and general caretakers staff the park.
