Readers’ Column for the week of Dec. 31, 2017

You may call the Owego Pennysaver Readers’ Column at (607) 687-2378 24-hours a day, or e-mail comments to readerscolumn@stny.rr.com. We reserve the right to revise or reject any message.

The sewer raise is ridiculous. That is OVER ONE-HALF MILLION A YEAR from this day on. They will have a large pot to move for other jobs or services. It is impossible for the sewer system to need an additional half-million a year forever.

You are more likely to be killed driving to the airport than on an airplane. Hogwash! There are about 29,000 commercial flights per day, while there are 1.1 billion car trips. It would take the airlines 104 years to make that many trips. How many have been killed in airline history, about 16,000! Cars – 1.1 billion trips, kill 117 people. So each time you get into an airplane, you are AT LEAST 137 times more likely to be killed than when you get into your car!

This is to the person who hit the small Chihuahua on Main Street Monday night in Newark Valley and left it in the road to suffer. How could you leave a small dog crying in pain until some good Samaritan found him and later took him to Cornell where he died. What is wrong with you?

~

I find it hard to believe that the Owego Village board raised the sewer rates $168.00 per year; this has to be a shock to the older folks who are mostly in one person homes and probably do not come close to using the minimum water per quarter. It is not right for a person living alone to pay the same amount as a family of four, five, or even more. The village is being run by a bunch of nincompoops (no pun intended) and hopefully we can weed them out starting with the March election.

A Big Thanks goes out to the Newark Valley Fire Department Auxiliary for placing the American Flag in the District Community Room. Now all the organizations that Honor our Flag will finally be able to do so. It would be great if the Board of Fire Commissioners would see fit to put a telephone back in the Community Room.

I was wondering if before Sanmina leaves the Owego plant if the DEC will do a test for TCE gases at the Sanmina facility. Back in 2005 TCE levels were very high under the Sanmina plant. At that time they were venting gases from under the building to try to correct the problem. At the time the state guideline for indoor air was 5 micrograms per cubic meter. At that time the readings were all different, with one as high as 177,350 micrograms per cubic meters as stated in May 17, 2005 Press & Sun Bulletin front page article.

I have a 21” color Anderson TV with remote for free, come and get it. Call 687-1528.

I just wanted to say that I agree with Abigail Eaton, an Owego resident struggling as a dairy farmer. We often take these people too much for granted. Thank you Abigail, nice article in the local paper and God bless you and your family and thank you for all you do for us. We eat every day because you are farmers. God bless you and stay safe.

Free diabetic supplies, 30 gauge and fine gauge diabetic lancets, brand new still in box. I have four boxes of 100 each. Call 625-2971.

I’ve lived in the town of Owego for well over 50 years and I just wanted to let the taxpayers know that I’ve never seen the Town of Owego Highway Department operate as bad as it is now.

Yesterday was Christmas, and in the afternoon I noticed that Me TV was on channel 2. I was delighted to see the Donna Reed Show, a good classic wholesome show that’s enjoyable, and it doesn’t make you feel like you want to take a bath after watching it. I was wondering how could I get Me TV? I looked through all the channels on Spectrum Cable and I couldn’t find that channel.

I would like to thank the trash collectors and the men who pick up the recyclables for all the extra work they do during the holidays. It is appreciated!

To the person(s) who put many unwanted items in the St. Pauly Textile shed at St. Margaret Mary Church in Apalachin, please be reminded that we CANNOT use them. There are other places where they could be donated (e.g. the Salvation Army or the Open Door Mission). Please refer to the information posted on the shed regarding what donations we CAN use. Putting the items in tied plastic bags (not loose, or in cardboard boxes) is appreciated. Many thanks to those who follow these guidelines and donate so generously.

Another wonderful breakfast sponsored by the NVHS Student Council on Dec. 22 at the newly remodeled fire station in Newark Valley. Many thanks to the students, staff, and to all who helped. We seniors enjoy the spirit of the season. We loved the music, the pancakes and the sausage. We loved the Santa hats and reindeer antlers too. So very festive! We did miss seeing our former colleague and friend, Sherrill Ward. Hope she can join us next year. May 2018 be a year of the best of everything for all. Happy New Year!

National Political Viewpoints

Can you believe Trump had his congressmen line up to give him praise? Why don’t they bow down and kiss his feet and lick his toes and kiss the furor. Give him a big ole kiss, kiss the furor! That’s what he thinks he is. This has got to end. It’s sickening!

Our brilliant president has not even signed the new Trump tax plan and Democrat dunces like Pelosi are babbling about Frankenstein monsters! Meanwhile AT&T is giving $1,000 bonuses to 2,000 workers, Comcast is giving $1,000 bonuses to their workers, Boeing will invest over $300 million in their workers and are hiring more workers and are upgrading their manufacturing. The good times are just starting!

~

I’ve got to know, how can Trump threaten China in any way, shape or form when they just made a limited edition Trump bear for him; and I’m sure he will get a lot of money out of them. They’re all sold out and I just happened to get one. It’s big; it’s a toy for no one less than 12 years of age, so therefore it really is a collector’s item. Can you imagine the money that sucker made, even if they put out 1,000 or 5,000. That SOB can make money without even realizing and then take down the people that helped him make the money! I don’t understand; I’m not a politician apparently.

I think men should start suing men for sexual harassment because of the seductive and lewd way that they dress. The women have no respect for themselves or anyone else. They’re asking for it. If you want to be professional, then button it up, zip it up and cover it up.

~

So now President Trump will supply anti-tank missiles to the Ukrainians, which I applaud, so they can defend against Russian invaders. How does that fit in with the Democrat buffoons who started the phony Trump/Russia collusion lie?

~

We now know the Obama administration protected the Hezbollah drug trafficking operation in order to save Obama’s corrupt Iran nuclear deal. Now it is apparent that loyal Americans have more to fear from the Socialist Democrats than from Isis, which has been crushed in Iraq and Syria by our patriotic and decisive Commander in Chief, Donald J. Trump. We no longer lead from behind and Trump has done an amazing job in one year making American great once again.

~

What planet do you live on? Mr. Trump plays golf almost every week in Florida or New Jersey or somewhere else. He has played more golf in one year than Obama did in eight years.

~

Not only is our First Lady beautiful and stylish in the way she dresses, she’s highly intelligent, speaking four or five additional languages. Finally, someone in the White House we can be very proud of.

~

Isis is losing territory and they are losing the war. A big thank you to our Commander in Chief, President Trump, and our fantastic military!

~

I hope you happy little Republicans get more money out of your tax scam than us seniors got out of our COLA increase. They gave us $29 more and then raised our Medicare by $25. I am sure my extra $4 will spur the economy on to greater heights Mr. Trump. I might be able to buy a couple extra roles of toilet paper because we sure need it with all this stuff coming out of Washington these days.

~

President trump has told a group of firemen that he has signed more new legislation than any President since Truman. He has actually signed the least. The important question is whether or not he really believes these lies. If he does, he suffers from a serious mental condition. Scary!

~

It sure is refreshing to have a President actually DOING something, instead of playing “hoops” or golf! What President Trump has accomplished in one year makes the previous eight years look even worse in comparison! Glad to see President Trump doing the Serv-Pro thing, “Like it never even happened!” But notice, as horrible as the previous eight years were, no one burned cars, looted and destroyed buildings, or had a Rosie O’Donnell making a fool of them in protest!

~

Ya gotta laugh. NOBAMA racked up some 5 trillion in debt over the course of eight years, no complaints from the media. President Trump causes $1.5 trillion debt increase over 10 years, the air is flooded with rhetoric complaining to high Heaven. Why the difference? I’m betting this $1.5 trillion won’t happen due to increased work for people, resulting in increased revenue to the Treasury Department to offset the increased debt, just like under Reagan.
