A fire broke out at 56 George St., also the location of Owego Taxi, at approximately 10:30 a.m. Saturday. The smoke could be seen billowing, and flames soon shot from the first floor interior of the home.

Crews responded from Owego, Apalachin, Campville, Tioga and Newark Valley to assist.

According to homeowner Glady Stables, who was across the road while the blaze was being battled, everyone got out of the home safely.

Firefighters worked for several hours to contain the blaze.

We do know that the fire did not damage the buildings behind the home, and where the taxis operate.

I was picking up my daughters from Cheer practice at the school when the fire started. I pulled over as well as another parent, Erika Hartman, and called 911. Both of us entered the home while it was on fire to help the people inside, one was disabled and could barely walk. First responders showed up a little bit later when we had gotten the people out of the house. I myself am 7 months pregnant. Just glad we were able to help and everyone got out ok.
