Clarification: Following the publishing of the story about a proposed Aldi purchase of the Scoville-Meno property in Owego, we were notified that the property has not been purchased yet by Aldi, and that there are many contingencies that must happen before any sale is made or is final. The story was misleading to some of our readers.

In an email received from Scoville-Meno Dealership in Owego following the print edition of this story, they stated, “Aldi has not purchased the property, they have an option until March, which contains many contingencies. They can say ‘no’ anytime in the interim, whereby we will remain.”

Meetings have been taking place recently regarding an application by Aldi to construct a 19,000 square foot store at the current Scoville-Meno Auto dealership location on Route 17C in Owego.

According to officials, Car Star and the medical office, which are located on the property, would remain under a lease agreement.

Special Use Permits were required by Aldi to build in a floodplain, with economic development and planning, Owego’s planning board, and the Town of Owego utilities approving the variances and permits needed.

Construction will begin in March of 2018 at the 17C location. Once completed, the store will create five full time positions and over 20 part time jobs at the Owego location.

Scoville-Meno Auto dealership, in an interview with media last week, stated that they will be relocating their dealership outside of the flood zone. The location they will be moving to, however, has not been disclosed.
