Drugs from take back events delivered to Syracuse

Drugs from take back events delivered to SyracuseOn Saturday, Oct. 28, the Tioga County Sheriff’s Office participated in the semi-annual National Drug Take Back Event sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Administration. The event, held at Trinity-CASA in the Village of Owego, was a huge success. The total amount of unused and unwanted medications collected in a four-hour period was approximately 131 pounds.

On Tuesday, Oct. 31, the Tioga County Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with the Waverly Police Department, delivered approximately 620 pounds of unused and unwanted prescription and non-prescription medications to an incinerator facility in Syracuse for destruction.

The total amount destroyed included items collected from medication drop boxes at the Tioga County Sheriff’s Office, Waverly Police Department and Owego Police Department, as well as drug take back events held by various agencies since May 2017.

The destruction of these unused and unwanted medications was made possible by working closely with the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Syracuse Office. Tioga County is a part of the DEA’s Central New York region. The DEA estimated a total of just over five tons of medications were destroyed that were collected from DEA’s Central region.

The Tioga County Sheriff’s Office is proud to work with these local, state and federal agencies to get these unused and unwanted medications destroyed to help avoid potential environmental hazards as well as the potential to be abused.
