Yeier House in Candor destroyed by fire

On Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2017, multiple crews responded to a structure fire at the Yeier House located at 3 Ithaca Rd. and on the corner of Honeypot Road and 96B in Candor. The fire started at approximately 6 p.m.

According to officials on the scene, multiple units responded to include crews from Candor, Spencer, Weltonville, and Owego fire companies.

With support and assistance, the perimeter and several roads surrounding the home were blocked off, and traffic re-routed through town and back to 96B until the area was cleared.

Carol Henry, Candor historian, stated on Thursday that the Yeier House, built in 1865, is one of the older homes in Candor with the Hollister House, across from Maple Grove Cemetery, being the oldest and built in 1795.

The home was engulfed last evening, and although the home was for sale and was not occupied, the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

As for the home, Donald Yeier, who owns Vernonscope telescopes and resides at the home next to the Yeier House, is the son of the late Eudora Yeier, who passed away in July of 2004. Donald Yeier is the current owner of the home, and had it listed for sale by owner.

The home remained vacant following Eudora Yeier’s death. We will have more details as the story develops.
